Jubhu #1305

General

Jubhu live in isolated areas around Taggelisk and the edges of the Etain Desert, where they can stake out large territories and defend them aggressively. These territories are surrounded by a ring of burnt vegetation, created by the jubhu's fire magic. Jubhu are solitary creatures and view almost everything and everyone with suspicion, but can be slowly tamed with offers of fish and small mammals. Even so, jubhu will still remain aloof and aren't above giving an annoyance a quick little nip or singeing their hair. Jubhu can live for up to 50 years, so magi wishing to raise one are advised to start when young enough that they can feasibly care for the jubhu its entire life.

Egg

This egg is hot and frequently shakes with the loud clattering sounds coming from inside.

Hatchling

Jubhu hatchlings are much blander in colour than their parents, in order to help hide in mud and grasses when the adults are off hunting. This doesn't mean they aren't just as grumpy, though fortunately they don't yet possess fire magic. Even when freshly hatched, a jubhu is territorial and will go so far as to drive its own sibling out of the nest if it can. Magi should concentrate on raising just one at a time, and focus on gaining its trust with food and patience. Their reward is a companion that, though not exactly docile, willingly stays by their magi's side for many years.

Adult

Once a jubhu has reached approximately a year old - and most of its adult height, which can put it as tall as an average magi - it sheds its bland feathers in favour of fiery colours - and abilities. Jubhu adults are patient hunters, waiting in silent stillness for prey to pass by, at which point the unfortunate catch is decapitated with the jubhu's large, shoe-shaped beak. Though they are generally silent in all aspects of their life, jubhu do occasionally make a loud clattering sound with their beaks, mostly as a greeting and occasionally as a threat. This clattering can also serve to ignite sparks that drop onto their feathers, lighting them on fire. This doesn't hurt the jubhu; in fact they do this on purpose in order to dance their fire around their territories or ward off particularly aggressive predators.
