Leviathan Archipelago (Contest Entry)

Post by SilentSkieBlue »

A tale is told among the magi, though rarely any more, about the origin of the more exotic aquatic life that dwells in this stream--the Leviathan and the Kraken.

The tale begins on a large Archipelago, far off in the sea. There were five islands that comprised this island chain, two were of a large size, being tens of miles across and supporting many forms of large life that cannot be described, the other three being smaller.

What truly unified these islands was the life in and around them. They supported many forms of life--though, because they were considerably small for the size of the organisms that lived upon their rocky backs, the land life flew from island to island.

Though the Leviathans and Krakens were not most intriguing in their lifestyles, they play the key role in this tale. Both let their eggs sit in the tides of the beaches, being washed over by the lowest tides to be kept moist, and out of the way of potential water-borne predators. As one might imagine, this cause the occasional dispute over nesting territory, with the occasional blood spill.
Leviathans screeched and roared, declaring the site they had chosen as theirs, and fighting off any who dared claim otherwise. Kraken bit with their sharp beaks, tearing the skin off the opposition and defending their brood.

At this time there were more than the few breeds of Leviathan that now inhabit our stream, and each favored a different place for laying their eggs, based on their camoflauge. Some laid their eggs in storms, on the brink of swampy areas...While the Kraken simply laid their eggs anywhere they could bury them, being a more singly populous species. This arrangement ment minimal--though inevitable--confrontations between the two species.

There was, at one point, a mated pair of Leviathans searching for a suitable place to lay their eggs. Their names were Phesharuuk and Melkaroeke. Phesharuuk, the mother, pulled herself up by her fins to the beach to lay her eggs while Melkaroeke watched for any opposition. She found a beach with soft, fine grained sand, and began to dig.

As she dug, a foul screech hit her ears--A Kraken War Cry.

She turned, ready to flee and protect her brood or stand and fight with Melkaroeke, and was aghast. He collapsed into the water, blood pouring from his neck and staining the water. What had slain him she could not see, but a fleeing tentacle dipping below the water and retreating quickly.

Her mind turned red. A Kraken had killed her mate, and not even claimed or stayed to fight for the nesting ground. There was no excuse.

Blinded by rage, Phesharuuk dove down into the sea, ready to kill the criminal Kraken. Though she searched, she could not find it. She burst forth from the sea and sang a Leviathans Lament--it was heard by all the Leviathan across the Archipelago, and they heard her story. As one unit their minds turned blood thirsty. If the Kraken would cause such a tragedy, they would be dealt with.

Unknowing, the Kraken themselves faced a terrible loss. Several Kraken had been slain in pairs, just like the Leviathan Melkaroeke and Phesharuuk, though the only living witnesses claimed to have seen a single serpentine tail splashing the waves after the slaughter.
The Kraken unified as the Leviathan, and both met between the two large islands. No words were exchanged, as both sides viewed the other as a bloodthirsty enemy bent on their elimination. And in truth, both were.

They collided, Leviathan versus Kraken, the current of water between the two largest islands turned crimson and the shore life dwindled in the slaughter. The populations were large, and many died not only of wounds.

A Kraken screech haulted the battle in unison with a Leviathans surprised Scream. The call was so haunting, many stopped their attack to see what had happened.

What they saw was terrible. A creature with a cat-like head rose out of the depths, holding two victims in large, blue-gray tentacles that sprouted from its torso. It screeched a call of triumph as it tossed both in the air and caught them around their vital veins--their throats torn out, it caught the blood in the air and drank it. It dove down below, and a long, serpentine tail splashed the water, casting the bodies of its victims into the air and landing them onshore.

Screams of terror washed through both sides of the battle as they fled. What they had seen was terrible, despicable, and so they fled. The terrible creature was unknown to but the oldest of them, and then only as a legendary demon.

A few--those few who had lost their family to this beast--turned and stood against it. Though no words were spoken between the groups, their intent was clear. While their fellows fled, searching for a refuge, they would fight.

A cry rose from the combined forces--A cry with heartfelt bloodlust. A cry for vengance. The beast turned and focused it's swirling yellow-purple eyes on them. None lost heart at the sight of those pupiless orbs, but charged.

As overcome like a spider swarmed by ants, the beast swatted and bit at its attackers who were hardly as large as its tentacles, but to no avail. They bit and squeezed and fought, and soon the beast was adorned by its own blood--a deep, evil yellow.

It wailed--a song harsher than a sirens scream--and creatures took off from the forests on all the islands, following the fleeing Kraken and Leviathan troupes. The gigantic beast thrashed, casting many of its assailants onto beaches. Those that were able came forth again to the fight, their eyes steaming with fury. They would take it.

As it continued to fight and weaken, a great rumble was heard from the islands by those fleeing. Many turned to watch, and the story gets jumbled here.

Some said the terrifying beast burst into flames and erupted in likeness to a volcano. Other witnesses claimed the creature ate everything before collapsing into the depths, never to be seen again.

Personally, the ending I believe is this: The swarm of Kraken and Leviathans felled the beast, and began to return to their kin amidst the rumble. As some turned to return, the islands throbbed as if the back of a great serpent. An oceanic earthquake shook the now orange-stained water, and crashed it over the calm islands. If any beast was still confined there, it was engulfed. The sea creatures dove beneath the waves and watched as the islands--their nesting grounds--collapsed beneath the torrent.

Afterward, the creatures wandered, the airborne escapists resting on the backs of Leviathan. Among this journey the many Leviathan and Kraken made a truce. They compromised their languages and agreed to live together in peace forever, ready to unite in the case a beast such as that threatened them yet again.

Though they eventually split up in search of a suitable home, the Leviathans found signs of the Kraken as they headed toward the mouth of a river.

The river was too fast for either to lay their eggs, but the Leviathan troupe could smell their allies further upstream, and following the scent, found them living in peach in a stream among many beasts whom had found refuge here as well.

Understanding the power of the Magis who captured and raised the younglings found in the stream, the leviathans made their home in the Magistream, hoping that, perhaps, the magis could protect them from such a beast as had cast them from their home.
