The Origins of the Magistream (slightly edited!!)

Post by slaerakuyume »

This is my competition entry for Magistream's Legend Writing Contest.

Be warned: This is a very long 'history'. It has been split in to two parts, separated by a divider. The first part of this story is the Birth of the Magistream itself. The second part of this story tells of how the Magi came to use the eggs of the stream as their partners.

If anyone has any comments, or constructive criticism, please post.

Please do not post with a 'tl;dr' (too long; didn't read [it all]). This is actually a very frustrating thing to see. If you do not have the time to devote to reading all of this, I would appreciate if you did not waste time reading only a part of it.

Flamers/ people with non-constructive criticism will be ignored.
======

There was a time when great creatures of legend ruled the universe, acting as gods among all the smaller living things of the world. These beasts were attuned greatly to magic-- some believe that they are, in fact, the very source of magic itself and without them, magic would surely die. One such god, a mighty Kraken named Dreon, roamed through space as if it were a limitless ocean. As he passed the planet we now call Earth, he looked down in sadness at the barren rock, devoid of water and life. Naught but dirt and dust swirled around it. So, with a mighty swing of his powerful tentacle, Dreon slammed his limb down upon the dusty little planet and cracked it's rocky flesh, rising up mountains from the very power of the strike.

The crack spread and from it came the rivers, oceans, and lakes of this world. In between the crevices of his suckers, water clung. The water was from the heavenly ocean in which Dreon frequently swam.. But Dreon had been away from the Ocean of the Heavens for a very long time, having been traveling in naught but the empty blackness of space itself. Stardust, too, had clung to his suckers, infusing with the water; and from the place where Dreon initially struck, the stardust accumulated, giving the long river a shimmering glow, the newborn stream sparkling with the powers of the heavens. From this magical river, all life was born, with animals and plants springing from the riverbed, alive and joyful, praising Dreon and the river that birthed them.

For the longest time, the river was lush and flourishing, with all animals of the earth coming back to the river to breed and lay their eggs. But soon, populations began to spread. Only the animals most in tune with magic remained at the river, continuing to lay their eggs in the waters that had birthed their first ancestors.

As time progressed, the creature known as "Man" quickly had forsaken the riverbed. Man was not in tune with magic as the others were, for Man had been born last of all the river's creatures. But as man left magic behind, science and technology allowed Man to prosper at the cost of the rest of the River's creatures. However, a select few Men, now known as Magi, began to feel a longing and emptiness within them where the magic had left. They began to seek out what was missing.

A Magi named Thane was the one who found the birthstream. In his travels, he stumbled upon a river, shining and shimmering with a beauty that he had never seen. Kneeling over the shining waters, he saw within it strange, wondrous eggs floating gently in it's waves. From the water's depths, the metallic form of a Koi slid upward through the water, praising Thane for finding the birthstream with an enchanting dance. The Koi, using both magic and water, told Thane of this history behind the stream by weaving out pictures on its bright scales -- a history long forgotten by Man. But, Thane soon became discouraged. Man had grown so far from magic, they no longer laid the eggs that the stream could support! But the koi, using the pictures that formed on her scales, simply told Thane to fear not. Though Man could no longer be one of the streamborn, those willing to seek its power would be granted a connection with the magic of the stream. Thus, the pact between the streamborn and the Magi was made-- the streamborn and their descendants would ever act as the partners to those willing to care for the eggs of the stream with all their heart.

Thus, the birthstream was finally given a name to reflect the pact made between Magi and streamborn-- The Magistream.
