The Birth of the children of the Father of Ice
Once when the world was still young two phoenix flew as close to the Mother of Fire as they could, to a high mountain and there they lived and laid their eggs. But they did not know of snowstorms and when one came they tried to burn it, their strength quickly failed and the fell lifeless to the snow.
Their eggs grew dark from the cold but the babies inside refused to die and their parents spirits flew quickly to the Sun, the home of their Mother, pleading with the Mother for their children's lives. The Mother of Fire heard their plea and wept molten tears for her children's children. The two parents were so despairing that she decided to speak with her brother the Father of Ice, to save the babies lives.
As the two great siblings drew close in the sky, the Mother of Fire dimmed herself, so as not to hurt her brothers eyes and darkness fell over the world. The Father of Ice spoke to his sister saying in tones like icy winds
“Sister, why have you come to me?â€Â
And the Mother of Fire replied in a voice like a forest fire
“My brother; my children's children lay dying in your storm, I beg to save their lives.â€Â
“I may not stop a storm my sister, and the eggs you speak of are dark with cold.â€Â
“Their parents weeping will not stop until the eggs are safe, Brother what may you do?â€Â
“I will take these eggs unto myself and remake them in my image.â€Â
And in that instant the eggs burned blue with cold and hatched. The hatchlings flew into the freezing storm and sung joyfully for the icy winds were like a mothers kiss to them and the blowing snow a fathers touch. And many years later after they had many eggs and spread across the world, when those that the Father of Ice had saved died, their spirits flew to Him and were joyful. And every now and then when the Mother of Fire and the Father of Ice meet, the spirits of their children meet and sing with happiness while their children still among us sing as well.
