I use multiple methods to name my creatures, especially when I'm stumped for names.
I usually name my creatures after some main feature they have, or some characteristic that really stands out. After that, if I can't think of anything, I'll usually look on Google or go onto an online translator and translate a word that most describes the creature into another laguage (usually Latin), and make that they're name.
Alternately, I may feel like naming them after my favorite video game characters or those from books I'v read recently.
If none of those work, I just pick something random
Do you have a method for naming your creatures?

I just think of something that sounds fancy.
If all else fails, I give it a really childish name. For example, I named my Meridian Capricorn Swimmy.

All my names are Greek...I plan on using only Greek names/words until I run out then I'll probably move to Roman names...Even if that means using Roman god even though I have the Greek ones *shrugs*

Re: Do you have a method for naming your creatures?
Any of the following:
A) I try to find a fictional representation of the creature (or the closest possible)
B) I look at the creature and think to myself "what does it remind me of?" Then name them according to that theme (My Dark minicorns remind me of chocolate, and so are named after chocolate companies)
C) Wikipedia + random page (not too often)
D) I let my cousin name them (I think most things she named for me has "King" or "Queen" in it)

Re: Do you have a method for naming your creatures?
I don't particularly have a method, but I have several ways that I name mine.
Sometimes I use names from other languages, usually found via BehindtheName.com but sometimes from my own very limited knowledge of other languages (Zahra Aziza, Seraphina, Ming, etc.). They usually have meanings. xD
Sometimes I name them after my own roleplay or story characters (Darrien, Ger, Cherise, etc.).
Occasionally I give them 'normal' names I just like for some reason. xD Charlie, Bradley, Maxwell, things like that.
When all else fails, I cram together a bunch of letters and make names out of that.
Although lately I've really liked giving creatures puns or other silly names. Like poor Dan Gao the tenera dog, whose name means cake in Chinese; or Rita Book (there are multiple ways to pronounce this, but it's supposed to be like 'read a book' when you say it really quickly).

And Zhaneel, too, though I chose a brown gryphon, not an ash. (Zhaneel is grey, apparently, in the books, but I don't like the ash here.)MoonFeather13 wrote:Skandranon... isn't that from The Black/White/Silver Gryphon?TalisRaye wrote:Other times, I use books/poems. (Skandranon, the Soot Gryphon; Mungojerrie, the Winged Cat; Ragna Roc, the Roc.)
And I was totally ninja'd on the Rashkae lineage name!

Re: Do you have a method for naming your creatures?
Simple: I don't name them.
The only exceptions being the Progenitors of the only Lineage I'll ever own, in which it's the Prismatic (like, colors) family, which are Puvias. Named Spectra (Spectrum of Colors) and Kaleido (Kaleidoscope), more light-based names.
