World Creation Myth

Post by archenstone »

Here is a myth told by those of the desert. It tells of the world's creation and why their own desert land is so special.

Far back, before the very dawn of time, the world was a blank ball of black rock. Nothing existed here. There were no sounds, no plants, no animals. The world was with out life. Then one day, a Phoenix appeared.

The majestic creature landed upon the barren rock. Where it came from, no one can tell, but the Phoenix sensed that this barren place could be changed. The Phoenix called out to a friend, calling a Celestial Dragon from where ever it lived before. The dragon flew down and, sensing the importance of this place, waited in silence for the Pheonix to begin.

The Phoenix began to sing softly. It's voice was like the tinkle of tiny bells. As the Phoenix sang, tiny pricks of light appeared in the black sky. These tiny lights were the first stars. After several minutes of listening to the Phoenix sing the Dragon began with a strong deep melody. His voice ululated up and down. The notes changing quickly back and forth from high to low. The Phoenix changed her melody to match his...accompanying it with light trills.

In the empty sky above, clouds began to form. They took the shape of massive thunderclouds and little wisps of moisture. They began to move and churn until little drops of water began to fall. ...And so the first rain drops fell upon the world.

At first, the rain simply fell upon the rock, pooling at the feet of the Phoenix and the Dragon. It sizzled against the flame of the Phoenix creating steam. As the rain grew heavier, more and more steam rose from the Phoenix and began to drift back towards the clouds. Meanwhile, the rain had caused the rock to soften and was now forming vast pools of water across the world. Neither creature stopped singing. In time, the Phoenix decided there was plenty of water and began to shift her tune. As the Dragon followed her example, the rain ceased. As she bought her melody into a series of quick trills and light cascading sound he brought his voice low and deep.

They continued to sing, weaving their melodies together in simple harmony. A wind began to blow where before there was no wind. Ecstatic, the Phoenix stretched her winds and flew up. The wind followed her and where ever she flew small grasses and flowers sprang from the ground below. The Dragon preferred to walk as he sang. His feet left deep imprints upon the new soil. Small mounds of earth where growing up from the bountiful land near him. They grew into many sizes and shapes. Trees also grew up from the soil. They rose faster than any tree known today....filling the new earth with verdant life.

And the earth continued to grow as yet again the friends melody changed into something new. Their song took on a faster beat. The sound of their voices making their own hearts race. The mounds of earth around the dragon began to tremble and shake. The smallest mounds broke first, revealing little rodents and birds. The larger mounds broke soon after, showing many creatures from felines to deer. The largest broke last, these where giant creatures, some of which went immediately into the water.

At this point the dragon stopped singing. He looked around him, seeing the work of his voice shape the once barren land. He hummed deep in his chest in happiness. His friend, the Phoenix flew back near him, circling several times, her voice getting stronger and stronger. The heat of her wings grew intense, so intense that the ground below her had turned to desert. Realizing her heat was too great for the new world she flew up and away and as she disappeared into the horizon the sun came up for the first time. The dragon spread his wings and flew, still humming his happy melody in his chest. He flew back to where his friend had first called to him. Covering their prints was now a stream....still forming from the steam that had come off the Phoenix. The Dragon landed at this stream and blew gently into its newly formed waters. His breath mixed with the last of the steam around it and created little eggs. These eggs began to float in the stream, where later on they would be found by people like us.

He flew up once more, gliding over the warm desert that his friend's heat had created. He saw that this would be a harsh and beautiful place. Singing once more he shaped it further, creating rock and stone that would block the sun's rays for the creatures here. He encouraged a couple pools of the cleanest water to form among the sands....so that any creature wandering could slake their thirst. With the final touches of the desert forming he let the final note drift off upon the wind and turned towards the mountains far away, so that when ever his friend rose from the horizon he would see her again.

Thank you! I love feed back.

I almost did this story with just the dragon creating it but the Phoenix has more importance in the Desert...where it is from.
