Emery's entries: Aspiridian Softshell, Sky Bear, Orca

Post by Emery »

Aspiridian Softshell

Egg-
The tip of a golden-brown nose is poking out of this leathery egg.
(Description: A spherical egg of a white/creamy color with a small nose coming out of the top. The nose looks like an eastern spiny soft shell turtle's.)

Hatchling-
A small turtle hatchling has broken free of its egg. When it hatched, it went immediately to the water and hasn't left since. It fits nicely in your palm, and it's very soft, even on its relatively flat shell. This turtle buries itself in sand, and it's light golden colors blend in perfectly. When it surfaces to breathe, the hatchling never lets its back leave the water, and it watches warily before it darts back down to the bottom. You accidentally dropped a coin into the water, and you haven't seen it since.
(Description: The nose is slightly shorter in the hatchling. It has a short, thick neck and head and closely set eyes. It has four legs and flippers, two front and two back. All are the same size and webbed between short claws. The shell is just barely an oval, and is still very close to circular. The whole body has a sandy base color, with darker brown spots on the back and two short, straight, maroon marks between the eyes and on top of the head.)

Adult-
Your once small hatchling has fully matured into a giant with a shell easily the size of a shield. It now lives in the lake, resting on the muddy bottom. Occasionally, you'll see its golden head and nose at the water's edge, just barely above the surface. While it seems awkward the few times you've seen the creature on land, your Aspiridian is very nimble in the water and can disappear into the muck before you know it. The only way you can tell its location is by the distinctive red markings on its back, and near where the turtle has settled you spy a muted gleam of gold.
(Description: The adult has similar proportions to the hatchling, only the shell is slightly larger than other parts of the body. The head is a little wider and has a thicker lower jaw. Also, the nose is just a bit shorter. It's slightly darker in color than the hatchling. The dark spots on the shell are smaller and less distinctive, and now there are incomplete rings around the edge of the shell. The maroon markings between the eyes are slightly more pronounced now, and curl outward slightly above the eyes. There are also short, squiggly markings of this color on its back, mostly near the outer edge.)

General-
Aspiridian softshells can be found residing in watery areas of the world, from the Caves of Nareau to Lake Lakira and the ocean beyond. Most live in lakes and rivers, but they sometimes inhabit the warmer, shallow areas around islands as well. These creatures are often called Golden Turtles, not only because of their coloring, but for their tendency to hoard metals and other shiny objects. Aspiridians guard their stashes fiercely, and will often store their magi's valuables along with their own. They tend to be solitary creatures, and in the wild will generally live no more than five to a small lake. Aspiridians are long-lived, though their life span isn't nearly as long as that of tortoises or sea turtles.

Sky Bear

Egg-
You can see lines ripped through this egg where hard claws broke out.
(Description: A dark brown egg with three claw marks running through it diagonally from the middle to the bottom right. Underneath them, you can see pale yellow fur.)

Hatchling-
This playful cub came from your egg. It's full of energy around you, but very shy in the presence of others, Magi and creature alike. It seems to be most comfortable in high places, and enjoys climbing on top of cabinets and tumbling off onto your head. You can already tell that the hatchling's main weapons are its wicked claws; the cub has shredded several blankets already.
(Description: Sky Bear hatchlings have pale yellow fur all over their bodies, with a darker line along their spines. Their eyes, ears, and paws are very large, and they have round faces with short snouts. Their claws are long, thick, and curved, and they have very short tails.)

Adult-
Your fully grown Sky Bear is much more independant than it was as a small cub. It wanders the Keep as it may, generally avoiding other creatures. It still watches you from high locations, waiting at the top of a flight of stairs or standing on a thick stone wall. Its light fur would seem to make it easy to spot, but when it ventures outside on rainy days, you rarely see it again until it decides to come back in. The bear obviously has a great deal of strength, and even lone direwolves seem to shy away from it.
(Description: Adults are much more muscular than hatchlings. They have the same general fur color, but the fur on the ridge of their back is slightly orange. Again, their muzzle is shorter than in most bears.)

General-
Sky bears in the wild are both a majestic and terrifying sight. While smaller than most bears, they are still quite powerful. Sky bears earned their name from their main hunting techinque. They climb trees, then wait for prey to pass beneath them. When it does, these bears drop from above. Only the largest individuals are unable to climb, and they instead ambush from rock outcrops and boulders. Sky bears reside in the Silva forest, and on misty mornings appear almost like ghosts, silent and beautiful.

Orca

Egg-
Every now and then, a puff of fine mist bursts from a small opening in the top of this black and white egg.
(Description: A black egg with a white patch on the bottom. It appears very shiny, and there's some mist around the top.)

Hatchling-
With the baby Orca that hatched from your egg, "small" is a relative term. Already, it's almost as long as you are tall. The calf is very active, and it gets along with other aquatic creatures well. It will often breach with great leaps and twists, splashing back into the lake after its acrobatics. The hatchling tends to stay in shallow water, where it can reach the surface to breathe easily. While it explores, you listen to its curious whistles.
(Description: A baby Orca. Its head is a bit large in proportion to its body, and its tail and dorsal fin are smaller. The patches behind the eyes and the belly are very faintly tinted rusty orange. The dorsal fin is very falcated, like a dolphin's, and the pectoral fins are large and paddle-like. Behind the dorsal fin is a small swirl of gray.
Pose: Facing the viewer, with the head pointed down slightly. The back and tail can be seen above, with the tail on a downstroke and a bit to the right. This is just my suggestion, and if it's chosen, the pose is completely at the spriter's discretion. The same goes for the Adult pose.)

Adult-
A column of air shoots up from the water as your adult Orca surfaces. A regal hunter, it's now a few times longer than you, and its dorsal fin is nearly your height. A swift, agile swimmer, your creature often ventures out into the ocean with others of its kind to hunt. It enjoys towing you through the water as you hold its dorsal fin. While it has plenty of pointed teeth, it's always very gentle around you and the younger creatures.
(Description: The adult's dorsal fin is much taller than the hatchlings, and it's almost vertically straight, with only a hint of a curve. The belly and eye patches are now pure white. The pectoral fins remain large, and the tail is bigger as well.
Pose: Twisting as if it's jumping. It's fairly vertical, with the head, upper body, and dorsal fin in a profile view.)

General-
Native to the waters near Arkene, Orcas are among the highest creatures in the aquatic food chain. They live in close-knit family groups called pods, ranging anywhere from three to thirty individuals, and occasionally more. They're very social animals, and whenever a Magi is near a pod, they can easily hear the animals' many vocalizations: squeaks, pops, whistles, splashes, and several other sounds besides. Orcas are regarded as very intelligent, and are very loving. If one of their family members happens to become stranded on land, the rest of the pod will remain with them, and possibly be stranded themselves. They'll even go so far as to attack a much larger creature, such as a Leviathen, if they feel it threatens any part of their pod, including their Magi.

Added the Sky Bear, and I'm almost done with the Orca.

EDIT: Done with the Orca now! :wee:

Thanks! Those two are definitely my favorite ideas, but I've done too much work on the Orca to stop now.
