Small, unassuming, and playful, goules quetzalcoatl hatchlings would be a joy to raise, if it weren’t for the shadows of their eventual powers already being apparent from the moment they hatch. They enjoy trying to curl around their magi for warmth, and must be quickly and firmly broken of that habit early on unless the magi wishes to constantly experience sudden unplanned bouts of intoxication and hallucinations for potentially the rest of their life. Even from a very young age, making direct contact with a goules quetzalcoatl can cause disorientation and fragmented visions of the immediate future. However, at this age, their cast off scales and feathers do not require particular special care to handle, and so are ideal ingredients for less potent potions and spells. Since goules quetzalcoatls are fairly uncommon at the Keep, owing to the difficulty of exploring their native habitat and the special considerations needed for handling them at all stages of life, these materials are carefully gathered and hoarded when available.

Goules quetzalcoatls are creatures treated with healthy respect and mild apprehension, for their strange powers. Direct contact with one of these creatures for longer than a few seconds leads to a strange intoxication, followed shortly by a prophetic trance. Found mainly deep inside the Ixan Jungle, a notoriously difficult place to explore, these creatures are most commonly seen slithering about in the slightly more accessible ruins of Chachen Ixa, almost as if paying their respects to the statue within. Some locals make a brisk business selling jewelry made from their scales and feathers to visitors. These talismans are less potent than contact with the quetzalcoatl itself, and their power fades over time, though they are more dangerous, as a goules quetzalcoatl will generally move off of a person to wake them, while the jewelry must be physically removed - a difficult proposition while intoxicated. A few particularly enterprising locals gather and make wine from fruit half-eaten by these creatures, which is similarly intoxicating but wears off on its own.
