Need halp on something I should probably already know

I've been fooling around with this trying to make it work, but I can't seem to save an image to not have a white background even if I don't have a white background layer when I save it. Is there a specific file type I should save it as? I use adobe photoshop elements, and I usually save as JPEG.

make sure you have no bg layer what so ever and save it as PNG

You can't save transparency when you do JPG. Only PNGs and GIFs (and maybe BMPs, I can't remember off the top of my head) support transparency. I recommend PNGs, as they store a lot more information than GIFs and don't take up nearly as much space as BMPs. All of those formats are viewable on web browsers.

Not to mention, .BMPs tend to botch up whatever image they're saved to, and make them rather pixellated (for want of a different word).

Another benefit of PNGs I forgot to mention is that they support partial transparency as well. So if you wanted an area to be translucent blue, then you can do that with a PNG but not with any of the other formats.

On the other hand, if you want animation, then only GIF supports that.
