Kareen ran, she did not know where she was going, nor if she would make it.
"There they are!"
She growled and picked her pup up in her teeth, the deformed creature wailed and kicked in protest. Kareen didn't care, the two-legged ones were coming, she had hunted with them, helped them, loved them. They betrayed her, moments after her pup was born, they killed her mate, and any other direwolf related to her. So many had died and not known why. She had never realized this before, but she was cold. Her leg had been pierced by a small pointy stick, before she had loved watching them slide through the air to here prey. Now the pain came back, she collapsed on the hard turf. The young one screeched, and as Kareen stared at him she realised why, why the creatures were chasing her, why her family had been killed.

The small direwolf stared at his mother wondering when she would get up and tell him it was okay. He licked the wound in her front leg and curled quietly beside her, feeling safe beside her muscular form. He curled his serpintine tail around himself and began to ponder the one questions he had. Why were those monsters chasing them? He had come to one conclusion, they were meanies. He streched his wings and noticed his mother was cold, he felt a foreboding presence coming towards his her.

Kareen stared at the man, she had seen him with the two legs, the Deathbringer.
"Don't you dare touch my son," She weakly growled, as she began to get up.
"I am here for you Kareen, not Taren," A voice whispered. Kareen growled and lunged at the Deathbringer. Her mouth came back empty. Taren screamed, It burned like a dozen fires in her ears, pounded more than the wound on her leg, It tore her apart. She growled and in a frenzy attacked the Deathbringer again and again. It was a futile attempt, in one smooth movement the Deathbringer slid his weapon through her skull.

Taren stared in awe as the glowing orb flew from his mother, into the shiny thing around the two-legged one's neck. He did not know what was happening, he was paralyzed by the beauty of it all. He had never known death. In a puff of foul odor the figure was gone, leaving behind his mother's cold body. Once the two-legged one was gone, Taren collapsed in a heap. It seemed as though the encounter had drained him of energy. He heard a rustle in the underbrush and looked behind him.

Everything his mother had told him about other creatures did not prepare him for this. He leapt back in shock at the sight of deep golden eyes, peering at him from a nearby fern.
"H-hello?" He quietly called to the eyes,
"What are you?" Growled a husky voice,
"I-I'm a direwolf" He carefully answered,
"Hmm....you look nothing like one" Stated the voice. Taren thought for a moment, flaring his wings he asked,
"Who are you?"
"That does not concern you. Follow me, I can tell you are running from the humans." The voice growled harshly and the eyes began to fade. Taren followed without hesitation.

"Where am I?" Head throbbing, Taren stood up. Looking around, he realized there were millions of golden lights surrounding him. He heard murmers in the distance.
"It's awake...."
"Y'know there was a dead Direwolf...."
"It looks like it's a...."
"Could it be?"

A single beast stepped out of the lights, Taren realized he was being watched.
"You, Manticore" The beast looked around, then continued, "What is your name?'' Taren looked for this Manticore creature. As the beast walked towards him and asked, "Can you not hear boy? I asked for your name."
"M-my name? M-my name is......Taren." He stuttered.
"Taren, do you know what you are?"
"I'm a Direwolf" The black feathered creature pondered this answer.
"The legends told of this event,"
"Event? What event?" Taren questioned his choice of words.
"The event of your birth child, we gryphons are gifted of sorts, we speak to the earth. Long ago, the elders were told of a beast with the head of a lion and the wings of a bat being born to a Direwolf. They called it a Manticore, the land has asked us to train you......"

Tanren felt Death's pull many times......
He was forced to train until his bones broke......
Yet he was not meant to fullfill the destiny set for him by the gryphons......
Enraged to find he was not the chosen one, he went insane......
He killed many and gave the Manticores a bad name......
For the elders had misheard the earth......
It claimed that there would be two, not one......
But that story is for you to discover......
