She was actually a shape-shifting rabbit, the only mark of her true self was the tiny tail her shadow has, but she usually wears jackets that cover it.

The jacket was black, just past waist length, with a fluffy hood that she had sown a pair of floppy bunny ears onto. Some might think this made her even more suspicious, but Kate believed that people often missed things that were in plain sight. For example, her textbook. She had searched everywhere she could possibly think of this morning and still hadn't seen a even a glimpse of the damn thing. Kate checked the time worriedly. If it was truly missing she would have to go to class without it -- which wasn't a very favorable option...

Kate had looked everywhere for that note book. She had to have it. But she needed to get to school. What would she do?

Kate shuffled around awkwardly, trying to think up where she could have put it. Her long purple hair swept around as she looked up her bed and whipped her head back up again. Kate sighed in annoyance, and thumped her foot rapidly on the floor while softly massaging her temples. A light went off in her brain, and she rushed down the stairs, bag in hand, and grabbed her book from the kitchen counter. Kate sharply exhaled and grabbed a peice of toast in her mouth from the dining room table that she had prepared the night before, rushing out the door and hopping on her bike to get to school.

On the way to school, struggling to steer the bike while eating toast, Kate narrowly missed a car and was promptly honked at. However, the rest of the ride went smoothly and she arrived at school - just in time to shove her stuff in her locker, grab her science materials, and head off to the science room.

Kate managed to step food through the threshold just before the first bell rang. The instructor looked up at her and frowned, chiding her for only narrowly avoiding being late. The science room was as it always is - stuffy, bright, and boring. The walls were a shade of khaki mustily faded from years of life without a upkeep. The floor - black and grey tiled linoleum - was scuffed along the sides of desks and chairs, betraying the paths the student body often chose to tread. She moved swiftly through the aisles of desks and plopped down in her seat. With a sigh, she gazed lackadaisically out the window to her right. The sun shone brightly against the blades of grass and the leaves on the trees outside being lazily blown by a slow, rolling breeze.

Her teacher said in a quite annoying, nasal voice,
"Well then. Everyone is in their seats, and we can finally begin. Now, as you all must remember, we were talking about the periodic table. Can anyone tell me how many valence electrons neon has?"
Someone raised their hand and cheerfully replied, "8!"
Mrs. Quinn, the teacher, just nodded and turned back around to the board to drone on and on. Kate had nothing to do to stave off time. She rolled her pencil back and forth on the desk, doodled on a post-it note, stared out the window and into empty space, basically everything she could do to keep herself occupied.
Her friend was seated at the very other side of the classroom, and even then, the friend in question wasn't exactly Kate's 'bestie.' Just someone she was sorta friends with. I mean, we all have that one friend, right?
As Kate was lost wandering through the boundless limits of boredom in a classroom, suddenly the sound of her name jerked her back to attention.
"Ahem- Kate, what are you doing? Answer the question!" The teacher said loudly. Kate stammered nervously, and looked to her friend-but-not-really-friend for help.

She managed to catch his eye.

For a moment, it seemed like he was going to ignore her. The tall, skinny guy was always quiet- no doubt that was why he didn't seem to really get along with anyone, and had even been bullied sometime back- but today, his brows were drawn together in a particularly cranky expression. If she wasn't so flustered, she might've wondered whether something had happened earlier.

Yet his eyes met hers, and he must've seen the pure panic on her face, because instead of ignoring her, he grimaced and raised his hand slightly, so that the teacher wouldn't notice.

"Well, Miss Hase? How many electron shells?"

Three. Jon was showing her three fingers.

"Th-three, ma'am."
