Actually Monotremata is a particular order that branched off from an earlier mammal group and retained several of its ancestral characteristics; other mammals aren't descended from monotremes, in the taxonomical sense, and so can't be considered monotremes themselves. The common ancestor between monotreme subgroups, marsupials, and placental mammals did probably have monotreme characters, but was not a monotreme itself.

This particular event isn't tied to any holiday, though. In fact, it's part of the map release that started last year.
