I saw that topic but it doesn't show adult versions of anything, even past ones, and the elkrin post is very confusing in particular because there appear to be two different female outcomes from the same baby??

Yup, just like CS xD Sometimes the babies will take the whole month to grow, which is why I recommend you only trading them after they get the rarities. C:

Well you could always say "there's a secret ultra rare pygmy that no one else has managed to get" I dunno if pygmies take longer to hatch too or if they hatch at the same time, since the other pygmy thingies like the wolves and ligers seem to have a longer growth cycle overall.

...Why do the same pets grow at different rates. wat. I have three ligers that appear to have reached the next stage of growth, and three that haven't. I hatched two ice dragon things and the other eggs haven't hatched, my spotted direwolves reached the next stage of growth but my black-and-brown one hasn't...
Also, I don't play CS, so CS references will be lost on me. U:

Okay then, an easier version is that pets will get to another stage at different times, and the longest time a pet will take to get to the adult stage is 31 days (if the month is that long, 30 days if the month is that long, etc.). They don't need to be fed or clicked on or anything, but all you have to do is wait for them to grow and get their rarities, which is when you'll know what kind of pets with which rarities you can trade for C:
