Yeah, they'd have to and always planned on requiring shards to breed. They're donation creatures. Obviously it's going to take something special - shards - to make them breed.

It's always been part of the discussion of doni breeding that the breeding would cost shards as well. Waaaaaay back on the original "already been suggested" list, donis breeding for free was denied, but for a shard cost was approved. If the creatures themselves cost real cash to obtain, why wouldn't their offspring? Remember, MagiStream has NO ads. Donations are the only source of revenue for the site. Undercutting that revenue by charging shards for doni creatures but then letting them breed for free or gold would have a serious detrimental impact on the site.

That said, lots of people are now selling 1st gens, or selling breeding for folks who have donis but not shards. Lots of people are stockpiling for gifting (and please Tristan, continue to allow hatchlings to be gifted so we can!). Most of all, lots of people who thought they would never be able to have an old, rare doni because they weren't a member of the site when it was released now have hope of getting their dream creature. Some extra hope and a new way to spread some joy is an awesome thing to me.

I mean, we all wanted breedable donis at some point, but now only donors can breed them. What a kick in the face.

Keep in mind that donors aren't breeding them for free--donors have to keep donating to breed them. Each breeding costs 3 shards. One thing I like about that--guaranteed success for a change! No "not interested"!

I haven't heard much feedback about the fact that 3-shards and 5-shards can breed together -are people happy/sad/indifferent about that?

I love it. I think a lot of people have only one of each or paired them m/f that way and it really helps them out.

I didn't want to deny that it is a good thing was just amused that they care so much ;)

AC, Maybe with Temple dogs or ember/fire drakes, since those are pretty common
