Bad Grammar - Bothersome?

If in the wrong place, feel free to move/already exists then just lock this.

So I was just curious about Magistream's opinions on bad grammar. And no, I don't mean like with dyslexic people; I know they can't help it. I even have a friend with it. I mean text talk, mostly. Or people who don't like fixing their grammar mistakes.

I myself am a bit of a grammar Nazi. I despise text talk and people who can't stop misspelling things. I am a perfectionist.

You don't have to say why you dislike it, but perhaps why it doesn't bother you, if that's the case.

For me, it's rather simple: if you (generic) cannot bother putting forth your best casual grammar (after all, no one is writing a formal report here!) efforts in what is essentially a written media for communication, then I will not bother to read it. By casual grammar, I mean such as you would use when conversing face to face. I expect to see some slang or swearing on occasion but the remainder of the post or message needs to be readily readable to a casual observer.

I refuse to use any kind of shorthand, including chatspeak, in even my texts and I ignore messages which are written in them.

It's unfortunate but I also think the increased use of those shortened formats allows people to be slack in all areas of written communication until they literally don't know how to use proper grammar any more. One oft friends is an English professor at a prestigious college and she gets written assignments turned in which are filled with chatspeak spelling... And the students have contested her grading them on that with the dean on the grounds that she is wrong about the spelling!

I have also, when I was manager at a fast food place, seen applications with chatspeak on them.? I won't hire someone who couldn't even take the time to spell out words like "you", "our", and "please".

I stand about where Tx stands on grammar.

For example, I recently read a topic on a gecko based forum where someone who was 22 ranting about their boyfriend and something or other. Besides the immature situation, she could not type anything properly. For example, she continually used "bc" instead of "because", "w/e" instead of "whatever", "DL" instead of "driver's license", and so forth. There was a serious lack of proper punctuation as well. In the end, after reading most of that thread, I ended up replying, "This thread makes my brain itch." :derp:

I agree that putting forth a post with good grammar and punctuation is a great idea. Doing so makes you look more intelligent, and as if you put actual thought into your posts. A sloppy post reflects badly on the poster.

That is exactly how I think. Once on this RPG called Feral Heart (it's a troll-fest where immature teens and slightly younger children roleplay; usually not that good, either), someone called me a racist because I said a lot of Americans don't use good grammar. When they asked what my race was and I said I was biracial (African American and Italian), they called me racist. What, because I'm not Caucasian I'm suddenly not American? THAT is racism. :( I don't speak or read any other languages, but I just assume that they don't really text talk. And even if they do, it's not racist. ._. It's kinda true.

And it's not against the law or anything, I just don't prefer it. A lot of people on there automatically think that because I don't like how their character looks/anatomy or how they spell that I am forcing them to change it... My word is not law. Get that through your thick skulls FH people. =____=

It really is annoying. Especially if they do it on purpose, to troll a thread or get some sort of reaction out of a person. I tend to correct mistakes on fanfics that I find, or even in books (Yes, there are still mistakes in them xD). If I find a fanfic with really bad grammar, I usually ask the person who wrote it if I can fix all of the mistakes and make it better. It does annoy people when I do that but I just cannot help it sometimes.

My stance is almost the exact same as everyone else that's posted so far. I wasn't on the computer much at all until I was about eleven or twelve, which is about when I started getting on to play checkers on Zone, so I had never run into chat speak until then. Honestly, I couldn't read or understand most of anything that I saw. It took maybe a week to start understanding what people were saying, and it was incredibly annoying. Just so I could talk to those people easier, I attempted to use chat speak - I didn't last more than half an hour doing so due to it being so far from how I am; I'm also a grammar Nazi and perfectionist. For a while, I tried politely correcting mistakes that I saw. After just so long, I gave up on trying to correct people that didn't know how to use anything other than chat speak.

And wow, TxCat, that's crazy. Shows just how bad people are getting with their English when they literally don't know how to spell anything properly.

FH isn't that bad, if you can find the right people to roleplay with. There are plenty of idiots, though.

I can't stand bad grammar. It's just lazy and plain stupid. I find myself using slang and such, but I always try to make sure my grammar and spelling is right.

I would have to agree with the opinions of the rest of the people here. It's been bothering me for a while that people misspell words, use incorrect, grammar, and, yes, chatspeak. Why are they bothering to take the time to post, if they can't take a little extra time to make sure their post is legible. I can understand using abreviations and chatspeak in some mmorpgs during real time fights. (it's much quicker, and you need to be quick when fighting. I even used abreviations when I was playing Fiesta). But on forums or other places where there is plenty of time to type out a post... (or other form of media) there's no excuse for not using correct grammar and spelling.

I tend to correct people a lot with grammar and spelling... even in real life. People get annoyed by it but sometimes I don't even realize I am doing it ._.

While I may overlook things here and there, I won't bother wasting my time on a person who can take the extra couple of seconds to write out the word please rather than "plz." Since the internet is, for the most part, a written way to communicate, if you can't be bothered to put your best foot forward when speaking to someone, it's plain rude.
