I'm trying to acknowledge the existence of gay and trans people in the world of my NaNo, but the story focuses really narrowly on a cis het pair of assassins, so the only time that anyone's orientation is going to come up at all is when they're reading up on their targets - like the viewpoint character will off-handedly mention that a female target is married to a woman. I just realized that it might seem a bit unfortunate if I introduce gay characters only for them to be killed off. What should I do?

You must have other characters, even if they're only mentioned briefly? Female MC has a gay sister, male MC's cousin is trans, stuff like that. Even if they're not actually in the story, maybe your MCs are idly chatting while on a stakeout and one of them tells a story about their [family member] and [family member's queer partner]. Or even just in description, like if they're in a crowd, two women are holding hands or a cute boy in a frilly skirt is buying flowers.

I feel kind of dumb for not thinking of things like that. This probably means my writing has too little in the way of background details, period.

I can offer these suggestions because I have issues with putting enough detail in too, so I'm training myself to get better at it.

I don't get people sometimes. My friend is complaining for weeks about a computer problem, and getting increasingly frustrated. I google the issue and send him a link with a few solutions to try. The first one works.

...Did he seriously not think to google the problem and find it on his own? What was he DOING for the past few weeks? I mean, maybe I'm the odd one, but Dr. Google (or in this case, computer Dr. Google) is the first place I always go.

Anyway, just got back from a physics exam which should not have been anywhere near as difficult as it was (stupid springs), but I'm glad I had plenty of time for it. It seems that exams where where you're not pressed for time are fair, at least -- you perform based on whether you know how to solve the problem, not on how fast you can do it.

On the other hand, I overslept for my vertebrate anatomy lab so I'll have to come in for a good bit of time tomorrow and Saturday to finish the cat dissection. I was planning on doing that anyway, but now I'll have to try to sort out the urogenital system as well as the blood vessels. And my cat has a pretty badly preserved abdomen, so I'm sure that'll be fun. Ah well, I like spending time studying for that class.

Also, have I mentioned that a squirrel ate my bike seat? Because a squirrel ate my bike seat, you guys. I can't bike to class anymore quite literally because of the ridiculous monster squirrels.
