Looks like a good list of resources so far! Chiming in about MS Paint- anyone who makes fun of someone for using Paint is a noodle. I can't use anything else for pixel art myself and only take my pixels into Photoshop for transparency. It's basic, but that's why it's a perfect no-nonsense platform ...

Elephant shrews- providing that hasn't already been done. I know there are a few rodents, but there's always room for more.

I might as well reserve this, in case I take this any further in the future.
