I encourage everyone here to read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susannah Clarke. Basically, imagine if Daniel Defoe was writing urban fantasy novels. It is seriously legit. And the TV adaptation was insanely good, given that they had a budget of precisely sod-all. =]
