Void Laika #1308

General

Often called cloud eaters due to both their diet and the clouds that gather around them wherever they go, void laikas are huge dogs that never stop growing. Legends claim that they can grow as large as a mountain, though this has never been verified. However, they do grow large enough that adults generally do not stay at the Keep, preferring to forge off on their own. Laikas subsist mostly on clouds, literally calling them down from the sky to eat, and what they don't eat swirls around them in a colorful, fascinating miasma. However, they have been known to hunt for and eat meat on occasion. Laikas can live for a very long time, long enough that their maximum lifespan is unknown. Magi speculate that the adult laikas may be capable of becoming incorporeal, and that is why despite laika being large and seemingly plentiful, running into one unexpectedly is an uncommon occurrence.

Egg

This large black egg is covered with elegant red patterns and is surrounded by wisps of cloud.

Hatchling

Laika puppies are very large, though still smaller than a direwolf pup, and incredibly playful and energetic. Magi caring for a laika puppy must devote a lot of time at first to feeding it and playing with it enough to tire it out, or its energy might get channeled into destructive behavior. Once trained enough to be mindful of its size and strength, and grown enough to feed itself by calling down clouds to eat, laika puppies make excellent playmates for young children, with their incredible softness, their eagerness to play, and their ability to project a calming aura. As such, the fluffy pups are a common sight at schools and other places with lots of children.

Adult

As they approach adulthood, laika puppies go through a massive growth spurt, going from the size of a large dog to rivaling mature direwolves in size in the span of a month. It is fortunate that they can subsist on mostly clouds, or feeding them during this time would surely be an incredibly difficult undertaking. Mature laikas keep growing their entire lives, though fortunately at a much slower rate. Adults seem to find living with humans too cramped, though, and tend to wander out into the wild on their own. No one has been able to determine where they go, exactly, but ones bonded to magi will answer when called, or sometimes drop by of their own volition for some pets. It’s therefore not an uncommon sight at the Keep to see a magi planted facefirst against their giant dog, having fallen asleep in the laika's wonderfully soft fur while administering scritches.
