Royal Ormyr #1294

General

A relative of the more common pearl wyrms, ormyr are larger and known to inhabit deeper waters, though they often come to shore to sunbathe on the warm sands of the Callisto Islands. Royal ormyr usually hunt in the twilight, when their violet and blue colouring allows them to blend in with the growing shadows. Though dangerous if provoked, ormyr are not aggressive and will usually prefer to swim away rather than fight, unless protecting a clutch of eggs or hatchlings. They seem to enjoy following boats, especially if they can startle the occupants by appearing suddenly from the depths, due to their high swimming speed.

Egg

This iridescent violet pearl seems to have horns growing out of it.

Hatchling

Royal ormyr hatch in the shallows near quiet beaches, usually tucked within protective rocks and watched over by their parents. Small and slim, they easily find cracks to hide inside to avoid predators and for whenever their parents are out hunting. Ormyr grow slowly, taking at least a decade to reach their full size. Magi who raise ormyr hatchlings usually keep them in bathtubs for the first year or two, where they can be mostly contained with siblings and toys to keep them busy, but as the hatchlings grow, they need to be moved to outside pools and then to the ocean itself. Though excitable and energetic, ormyr hatchlings are easily distracted by anything shiny, especially if it also makes noise.

Adult

A fully grown adult ormyr can cause trouble even for the leviathans they share the waters with, but they tend to be reserved instead of aggressive. Though they become much less excitable as adults, they retain a love of shiny things and a mischievous streak that mainly comes out when they're with hatchlings or magi, especially children. Ormyr raised by magi from an egg have been known to give children rides through the shallow waters bordering beaches - and also known for dumping them back onto the sand when they grow tired of the game. Their scales are too heavy for most people to use in armour but they occasionally lose the pearls lining their sides and these can be used to power all manner of spells.
