Amagnae Perception Advantage ( Creature #1177)

Post by Windi1 »

APA... Amagnae Perception Advantage... Chat here about what you perceive the next ones will look like.

Last year, we had shiny ones and a contest for the brightest and for the dullest. Every year, old ones are received from drinking (possible) and new ones from the Stream.

I am wondering what they have in store for us this year. Be safe in your travels and stay healthy!

*****************************

The new birbs are here! Old Amagnae are beginning to flood the Stream. Olive, Brown and Silver will continue for the next few days. We also have a new one that snuck in. What is it? We will find out.

Spoiler
One of the most varied of creatures, amagnaes boast many colors and temperments. The lightest of them, a bird with beautiful silver and dark gray plumage, is considered one of the most dangerous. It will charge and snap with a sharp beak if anyone other than its magi approaches, and is not overly affectionate. By comparison, the other brown colored amagnaes seem docile, though they too are not friendly creatures and prefer solitude. They will occasionally mingle with the wild turkeys, whether to migrate or hunt for food, but the villagers had best not confuse the two. Their gorgeous plumage easily marks them apart, and if a human does make the nasty mistake of hunting one, they are in for a horrible surprise. Amagnaes are very intelligent birds, and they love to play elaborate pranks. They will hide, sometimes for hours, and when an unknowing farmer attempts to cut the head off of a future meal, it will spring into action and attack. Their beaks are cruelly sharp, as are their claws. They will happily pursue the poor human until bored, leaving them with deep scratches to tend to. Not surprisingly, this does not endear these animals to most humans. Nor does their magical power: that to move objects at will. These birds are only capable of this magic when extremely angry, and use it viciously. Rocks will rise into the air and fly at the victim, or tree branches will fall. Naturally, this makes most everyone move very slowly and carefully when around amagnae, so as not to enrage them.

These creatures tend to love soft things, and enjoy cuddling or rolling around on blankets. Young phoenix amagnae can't maintain their heated temperatures as well as they can when they're adults, and tend to burn their offers off very often. Since they are small and somewhat fragile as hatchlings, to keep them safe and comfortable, magi often dress them in warm sweaters while their feathers grow back.

Autumn is an interesting time for phoenix amagnae. Their feathers burst in fiery conflagrations when they reach their peak temperature, and ashes drift through the halls of the keep as the feathers burn. Magi take care not to let their amagnae fly too far, for if their feathers burn off mid-flight, the poor creature may fall. Interestingly, even feathers that aren't attached to the creature will maintain their heat, and turn to flames and then ash once they heat up. Feathers are sometimes sold as heating devices to be used on long journeys, but must be discarded before autumn arrives.
Spoiler
These creatures are gorgeous--most of the time. Their feathers are silky and glow with a steady flame, a pleasing mix of oranges and red, with purples along their back. They are considered a symbol of autumn, and their feathers tend to reach their peak temperature during the autumn season. Their feathers grow hotter and hotter, the air shimmering around their bodies with the heat. Each phoenix amagnae can reach a specific temperature before their feathers vanish in a burst of fire, leaving the creatures naked until their feathers grow back. This temperature differs between each amagnae, with some bursting at a mere 200 degrees and others at blistering temperatures that are difficult to measure safely.

I know they aren't turkeys, but neither are quail! I'd love to see Lady Amherst's Pheasants or Ringnecked Pheasants...

Or maybe even Greater Prairie Chickens! I love their neck patches!

The first look like Ocelleta Amagnae to me. Bottom ones kind of do, too.

I wouldn't mind all black ones. Or more "hybrid" looking ones like our Otrovian ones, which look snake-like. Like a bat-wing one, or one with antlers.

Three of our current turkeys cover most of the real life variation in turkeys.
We've got a wild, domestic, and ocellated turkey, and those three are it as far as living birds are concerned.
There's the extinct California (and probably a few more even less well-known extinct species) if we're gonna go the turkey route again, but those weren't really too different from the eastern wild turkey when they were alive. Could play it up and go full ice-age saber turkey or something, tho, which I am all for.

The others we've gotten have been a more standard cockatrice in the Otrovian, the two Wugus that seem to take more from some fancy chicken breeds than turkey ones, the Quail which is obviously a quail, a peacock pheasant in the form of the Plectra, and the turducken wasn't an amagnae but it was a thanksgiving poultry so hey it counts.
Going by that list, it looks like the wide world of gamebirds appears to be a possibility. And man, there's a lot of really cool birds to pick from there. :haha:
I'd personally like a guinea fowl. We've got a cockatrice, a couple turketrices, and a quailatrice, but no guineatrice. That's the last of the common land poultry we don't have yet. Tho a duckatrice would be cool too, if we have to break into the waterfowl. :orly:

And so we measure in a competition of social distancing and how far away they're able to stay from others
Or vaccine amagnae, with the number of antibodies

As for something else
I get this slight Basilisk vibe from them, so... What if.... More snake to bird ratio?
This Signature looks so bad on mobile. Good lord it is HUGE. I'll need to work on that at some point. For now though I sleep
