(I'm really enjoying writing about them! And Flowey too  )

..........

"So, are you seriously going to follow the smil- I mean, him, around?" Flowey asked, while Sans was off talking with Papyrus. Flowey could tell Sans didn't trust him, considering the way he'd stayed in sight and kept glancing over at them uncertainly. Though, Flowey wasn't one to talk either, since he kept glancing over at Sans as well. After all their fights in Judgement Hall, Flowey knew Sans could definitely defeat him if they fought now. And if he did, Flowey wouldn't be coming back, unless Alia for some reason decided to reset.

At least Sans didn't know that yet. And Flowey would make sure he didn't find out. Otherwise, he'd probably be gone for good within five minutes.

"Yes," Alia replied. "Why do you not want me to, anyway?"

"That's none of your business!" Flowey hissed. However, he quickly calmed himself down. "Anyway... I'm sure you'd be having a lot more fun exploring on your own, right? You could always sneak off now, while he's busy."

Alia frowned. "No. I will ask him to let me explore on my own, but sneaking off now would ruin the chances of him agreeing later on."

Flowey sighed. "Whatever you say, kiddo." Well, at least it sounded like she'd try to explore on her own later on. Then he'd have a chance to talk with her, without any smiley trashbags interfering... Then he might be able to find out what she knew about Chara. Flowey certainly wasn't going to bring that up at any time Sans was around. The last thing he needed was the smiley trashbag figuring out who he was.

And by now, Flowey was certain Alia knew something about them. The way she giggled and then told a pun he remembered Chara telling occasionally, the way she'd asked specifically for chocolate nice cream... Those couldn't be coincidences. Not with everything else.

..........

Sans was somewhat confused by the noises he heard as Papyrus answered the phone, but assumed he'd been in the middle of cooking or something and was trying to multitask. When Papyrus asked why he was playing games, Sans wasn't sure what to think. Did Papyrus actually think he was joking about this? Why would he joke about finding another human, especially so soon after Mira showed up? If he had been trying to prank his brother, he would have waited at least a couple weeks, so it would at least be somewhat believable.

Besides, he had enough on his mind to not really feel up for pranking his brother at the moment anyway. Though, Papyrus didn't seem to see it that way, considering the way he sighed. Sans sighed inwardly as well as it became clear Papyrus truly didn't believe what he'd said. "well, alright then..." he agreed, heading back over to Alia and Flowey. "hey, kid, my bro wants to talk with you. is that alright?"

Alia seemed surprised, but nodded. "Sure."

Sans handed the phone to Alia, then glanced warily over at Flowey while she talked. Sans still wasn't sure what to think of Flowey tagging along. Flowey glared at him, but said nothing. Sans wanted to ask why he was so set on following Alia around, but figured the flower wouldn't answer even if he did. Well, whatever the reasoning, Flowey seemed like he was willing to listen to Alia, so hopefully that meant he wouldn't attack anyone, since Alia seemed like the type who would get very upset if he did.

As much as Sans wasn't a fan of Flowey because of all of his timeline manipulation shenanigans, he'd very much prefer this awkward peace over another genocide run. So, he was willing to accept this uneasy truce as long as Flowey was.

..........

Alia was surprised when Sans said his brother wanted to speak with her. Nonetheless, she nodded, not wanting to seem rude. She accepted the phone and spoke up. "Hi!"

"Hold the phone a bit away from your ear," Chara advised, and Alia did so without question, though she did glance at them curiously. "I could hear him from all the way over here. A bit too muffled to figure out what exactly he was saying, but enough to tell it might hurt your ears if it is too close to them."

Alia nodded, smiling gratefully.

Maybe it was just the fact that he was trying to not fall so hard for his brothers pranks lately that led to Papyrus being a bit skeptical that Sans had actually found another human somehow, the thought of a human, especially a child though, exciting him to no end as to him it was like a ‘complete set’.

They had Mira, a adult human, and now this mysterious young one that was likely getting along quite well with his sibling! If Sans truly had found another human than this would mean they could adopt yet another into their seemingly growing little family!

First though...he had to ‘test’ this child as he tested every human that fell down here. It was why he wished to talk to Alia so much on the phone, him wanting to get a taste of what she was like and if she was even going to be friendly enough to have around as he had read that some humans could be quite aggressive by default.

“HUMAN! IM SORRY I DIDN’T BELIEVE YOU TRULY FELL! MY BROTHER IS WELL KNOWN FOR HIS PRANKS!”, Apologizing nearly immediately as a chipper young by voice greeted him when Sans handed over the phone, Papyrus felt his Soul beating happily like a puppy wagging its tail at the potential to make a new friend, “MAY I ASK YOUR NAME IF YOU HAVE ONE? CALLING YOU HUMAN SEEMS A BIT ODD...”.

Alia was immediately relieved that Chara had given her the warning to hold the phone back a bit as Sans' brother's voice came through it. It was indeed louder than she'd expected, and she wouldn't have wanted to hurt the friendly-sounding monster's feelings by having to explain it had hurt her ears. She was a bit confused to hear that he apparently hadn't believed Sans at first. Even if Sans was a prankster, which she didn't doubt, joking about finding a human seemed like a rather odd thing to joke about.

"Well, that explains the whoopie cushion," Chara commented with a smirk, causing Alia to giggle.

"It's okay," Alia said reassuringly, not wanting Sans' brother to feel bad. She didn't really mind, anyway, even if she was confused by it. When he asked what her name was, Alia added, "I'm Alia! What's your name?" She felt happy to be making more friends, especially since they seemed just as nice as Chara and Toriel had assured her they would be. Even Flowey was being, well, somewhat nice now.

She wasn't really sure what to think of that, other than being relieved that it meant he wasn't still trying to kill her... Hopefully. With Flowey, it was kind of hard to tell. She also wasn't sure why he was trying to get her to explore on her own. Not that she didn't want to, for a bit at least. But why did Flowey want her to? It didn't seem like it was to kill her, he'd said himself he wasn't going to attack her since he wanted to see what she'd do. So she should be safe enough for now...

And why did he seem to hate Sans so much? It didn't seem like Sans liked Flowey much, either, though with how Flowey had kept insulting him at first, she didn't really blame him. At least Flowey was listening to her, somewhat at any rate, and not antagonizing Sans as much as he'd been trying to earlier. Alia was somewhat curious about it, but didn't want to break the uneasy peace by asking.

Papyrus feeling a bit bad now that he hadn’t believed Sans had really found yet another human so soon after finding Mira a week and a half ago or so, it was a bit of a conundrum in the way that Sans thought it was strange that he didn’t get why Pap would think he was being pranked and Pap himself just trying to not be fooled for once.

The voice on the other end of the phone was soft and sweet, a orange blush forming on the obviously swooned skeleton’s skull when Alia told her her name, the name...sounding somewhat familiar to the monster in some odd way despite him knowing no other Alias.

That was strange...why was he so sure that he had heard it before though?

Brushing it off for now, Papyrus tried to calm down his loud tone a bit as he put on his best ‘leadership’ voice to try and impress Alia, “I AM THE GREAT PAPYRUS!SURELY YOU HAVE HEARD OF MY HEROICS ON THE SURFACE~?”.

In all honestly, Papyrus -hoped- Frisk had told the surface world all about the monsters trapped beneath their feet when they had managed to get home, especially of how he had aided them in technically evading Undyne for so long, “AH, I ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER! WORRY NOY, TINY HUMAN, I WILL BE THERE TO MEET YOU IN NO TIME!”.

With that, the tall skeleton hung up, him already being curious as to who this new child was and if they knew of his ‘amazing’ feats. The ‘super secret’ dish he had made for Mira being done and cooking on the stove, he was off in no time to meet Alia and Sans and potentially even a mysterious, tiny flower that was the cause of his siblings many troubles.

Alia was relieved when Papyrus's tone decreased in volume slightly, since even with the phone held away from her ear, it had still been a bit loud for her. She glanced at Chara a bit nervously when Papyrus asked if she had heard of his heroics on the surface. She didn't want to lie to him, but it sounded like he was expecting her to have heard great tales about him before, and she... Hadn't. Frisk had told people about climbing Mount Ebott and returning, but as far as she knew, they hadn't said much about any specific individual monsters. She didn't want to make Papyrus feel bad, though, when he clearly thought news of him had spread far and wide...

Chara simply seemed confused, offering an apologetic shrug. It appeared they had no idea why Papyrus expected her to have heard of him on the surface.

Fortunately, Papyrus seemed to have decided he already knew the answer, sparing Alia from having to reply. Hopefully that didn't mean he would expect her to know anything about him already... Maybe she should ask Sans for a quick description of his heroic deeds...? She really didn't want to upset anyone, and on top of that, this was the brother of her guide. If she upset Papyrus accidentally, would Sans still want to show her around the Underground? "Okay!" Alia replied, but Papyrus had already hung up quickly after he finished speaking, and she felt a bit awkward when she realized that. She held the phone back out to Sans, unsure what to do.

She wanted to turn to Chara for advice, but they seemed just as confused as she was right now, and she didn't want to make them feel bad, as well. Fortunately, Chara seemed to figure this out, and spoke up so she wouldn't have to worry about it. "Try asking Sans about him. That was his brother, so he probably likes talking about him, anyway."

Alia smiled gratefully at her ghost companion, then turned back to Sans. "Um, would you mind telling me about your brother's heroic feats?"

"sure, and don't worry, okay kid? he's gonna be happy just to meet another human, i don't think he's gonna question you on what you've heard about him." Sans said, looking like he wasn't actually certain about that last part but wanted to reassure her.

Alia nodded, managing a small smile. She listened as Sans began to describe some of the heroic things Papyrus had done, trying to memorize and keep track of it all. She eventually noticed that at some point, Flowey had disappeared again... She wondered what he was up to, but figured he'd show up again at some point, like he had so far. She had more pressing things to focus on, after all.

Sans seemed to have noticed she was still worried, and smiled reassuringly. "seriously, kid, you have nothing to worry about. i promise," he said, and Alia could tell he meant it.

Her smile became more genuine. "Okay," she said, seeming to have gained some confidence from his words. Chara smiled as well, looking relieved that Sans had been able to help her feel better.

"hey, why don't we build that snowman while we wait for him?" Sans suggested.

Alia's eyes widened. "You'll help?"

"sure. not sure it'll turn out very well, but..."

"It'll be perfect!" Alia said cheerfully, starting to gather some snow. Sans tried to form the base for the snowman, and while it turned out much like a lump as he'd mentioned before, Alia didn't mind at all. Once she had finished making a large snowball, she began pushing it over to the snow lump.

"here, let me help, kid," Sans said, and the snowball started levitating.

Alia watched in amazement, and cheered. "Cool!" As Sans levitated the snowball onto the snow lump, Chara gave advice for how to balance it on the snow lump, which Alia relayed to Sans. Soon enough, the snowman was complete.

"uh, sorry it's kind of a lump..." Sans said sheepishly as he looked at the snowman.

"I think it's great!" Alia said happily. "Thank you for helping!" It had been even more fun than she'd dreamed- When she'd overheard people talking about building snowmen with family and friends, she'd always felt a bit sad, since she expected she would never be able to do so herself. Her parents would have been too busy, and she didn't have any friends on the surface. But now... Sans had helped her build a snowman, even though he didn't feel confident in his snowman-building abilities, and Chara had helped out where they could, too. It was the best snowman ever. Not because of how it looked, but because its very existence meant she had people who cared about her enough to help her make it.

"heh... snow problem. i'm glad you like it, kid." Sans smiled.

.........

Due to Papyrus's tone, even slightly lower than usual, being rather loud, Sans had been able to overhear the conversation easily. Sans could tell from her expression and a bit of nervous fidgeting that Alia hadn't heard anything about Papyrus on the surface, and seemed to be worried about it. Sighing internally, Sans wondered how he could gently break the news to his brother without Alia having to be involved. She seemed very scared of upsetting someone, not because they were monsters but just because she didn't want anyone to be upset.

Sans tried to reassure her after the call ended, though he didn't think he'd done a very good job considering she still seemed worried, so he just stuck to telling her some stories about Papyrus. At least his second attempt at reassuring her seemed to have worked better, as did offering to help her build a snowman. Sans still thought the snowman probably would have turned out a lot better-looking if she'd made it by herself, but since she seemed so happy about working together to build it, he had tried anyway. And... It had been fun.

It had even made him forget about the things he'd been worrying about, for awhile at least.

Papyrus already beginning to wonder if this new fallen child looked anything like Frisk or even Mira, the overeager skeleton had only ever seen two humans in his life and really wasn’t sure how much they could differentiate, him able to connect the dots that most humans must have had dark hair due to both of the fallen humans brunette hues and dark eyes.

They were also likely quite short! Frisk had been a child when they fell and eventually managed to leave and Mira barely reached his clavicle, him having to stoop to interact with her on any meaningful level.

What other connections could he draw?....well, it seemed humans enjoyed puzzles as much as he did! And puns!

There were still many other discoveries to be made, but Papyrus was sure he could figure them out and help Alphys in any way he could in terms of finding out more about the mysterious surface dwelling species. Of course, the scientist had told him a ideal test group would consist of a minimum of ten, but still....

............

It hadn’t taken long for the skeleton to traverse through Snowdin forest until he had managed to track down his brother due to their connected Souls, the sight of his still slightly worried looking older brother and a tiny human he had never seen before making his bones rattle in excitement in a way they hadn’t in quite a long time.

“HUMAN! It’s wonderful to meet you!~”, Papyrus intentionally trying to control his voice for once as he picked up young Alia into a swinging hug upon approaching her, the skeleton was clearly happy to see that voice on the other end of the phone hadn’t merely been his brother japing him, “Your MUCH smaller than I thought you would be! You must be a baby human, correct??”.

(For some just in case clarification, Alia has a fear of... not heights exactly, but rapidly changing altitudes without warning, ever since falling down Mount Ebott. Since Papyrus is a lot taller than her, suddenly being lifted to his height counts for that. That's why she seems a bit freaked out during this. Don't worry, she'll be fine)

.........

Alia was still looking proudly at the snowman she, Sans, and Chara had made when Papyrus arrived. She turned to face him when she heard the loud voice she recognized from over the phone approaching, smiling. Before she could say anything, though, Papyrus was suddenly lifting her up... Really high... Panic rose up inside her as she tried not to show how terrified she was outwardly.

"Alias!" Chara cried out, trying to reach out and stop him, but, being a ghost, they obviously couldn't do anything.

Being spun around wasn't helping, as it disoriented her further... By the time she was finally back on the ground, Alia stumbled a bit until Sans reached out and steadied her, letting her hold onto his hoodie sleeve for support until she had regained her balance. Once she'd recovered, she glanced over at Chara, who seemed very worried. She managed a weak smile, wanting to reassure them she was alright. She just hadn't been expecting that, is all...

She then turned to Sans with another weak smile and a whispered, "Thank you." Taking a breath, she turned back to Papyrus, keeping up the smile. She knew he couldn't have possibly known that suddenly being picked up like that would freak her out, so she didn't want him to feel bad. Deciding not to comment on it at all for now, though she figured she'd need to ask him not to suddenly pick her up like that at some point so it wouldn't happen again, she simply said, "Hi, Papyrus! It's great to meet you, too!"

Alia didn't mind the comment on how short she was; she knew she was quite short, even for her age, so having it pointed out didn't bother her much as it was a simple statement of fact. However, being called a baby did hurt a bit... She wasn't a baby! She could cook her own food, take care of herself... And she'd been doing so for years, at that. Still, she didn't want to upset Papyrus, so she simply shook her head. "No, I'm not a baby. I'm twelve."

............

Chara had been very worried when Papyrus suddenly picked Alia up. They had guessed, ever since that puzzle in the Ruins, that Alia did not like unexpectedly falling or being picked up. They were not too surprised by that discovery, considering she had fallen into the Underground which could easily have caused such a fear, even if it had not done so for them.

They had tried to do something, anything, to stop him, but... They were a ghost. They could not help much with something like that. All they could do was watch helplessly. Once Alia was back on the ground, they hovered protectively next to her, even though they knew they would not be able to actually do anything if he decided to do that again. At least Sans seemed to have caught on... Surely he would stop Papyrus from picking her up without warning again, right?

'Please, protect her when I cannot, Comedian...' Chara thought, knowing he would not be able to hear them even if they had said it aloud.

They looked over at Alia when Papyrus started talking about how small she was. She did not seem to mind being called short, but they could tell, even as carefully as she tried to hide it, that being called a baby had hurt her somewhat. They did not blame her; it sounded like she had already been through quite a lot, like them. They would not have appreciated being called a baby, either. With how carefully she was trying to hide it, though, they figured Papyrus would not notice it. Sans, maybe. The shorter skeleton did seem to be almost as good as them at figuring out when someone was hiding pain.

..........

Sans had smiled when Papyrus arrived, figuring the two would get along well. Though, he was confused when Papyrus suddenly picked Alia up; he'd thought Papyrus would wait on trying anything like that, like he had when meeting Mira... Unfortunately, it seemed like the sudden action had freaked Alia out, even if she tried not to show it. Since she must have fallen down here at some point, Sans figured she probably preferred staying on ground level now, which was understandable. Seeing her start to stumble, he reached out so she could hold onto him until she regained her balance.

Sans knew he'd probably have to talk with Papyrus at some point, to tell him not to pick Alia up like that anymore. It wasn't easy, since he knew his brother meant well, but he didn't want Alia to just keep dealing with something that made her uncomfortable because she didn't want to upset anyone.

Sans sighed inwardly when Papyrus indicated he though Alia must be a baby. Sans already knew that wouldn't go over well. Sans could tell Alia was a preteen, so she would definitely prefer to be treated like one rather than a baby who couldn't do anything for themself. Sans really hoped Papyrus would catch on and avoid treating her like she was someone who needed help with every little thing.

Truth be told, Papyrus still had a -lot- to learn about humans compared to what Sans seemed to understand about them, the overly tall skeleton likely giving the entirely wrong impression by asking Alia if she was a ‘baby’ human, him having no intention of actually treating her like one as the term was just one he assumed fit tiny human children like this.

It usually faltered between ‘child’ or baby’ human depending on his mood or the individual he was talking with, but truth be told they were one and the same, Papyrus most likely to treat Alia the same way as he had treated Frisk way back when...which was to say, being entirely ambiguous of what was appropriate for a pre-teen to contend with, from dangerous electrical mazes to ‘dates’ that defied what humans might consider actually dating.

Sometimes it seemed that he and Sans lived in entirely different worlds on how to deal with fallen humans, Papyrus seeing them as guests who were to be treated as such and who would be greeted by numerous puzzles as a sign of goodwill while Sans...well, he seemed to befriend them quite easily without japs or shenanigans whatsoever.

“Excuse my excitement, hu- I mean, Alia! I sense your uncomfortable with being hugged! I can see it in your eyes!”, Keeping his voice at a even tone for once as he wasn’t completely unaware of the static in the air due to him having suddenly picked Alia up out of the blue, Papyrus had learned from his mistakes with Mira and didn’t want to repeat them yet again, “Please let me know when you are not comfortable, okay?? It’s my duty to make humans like you content with your stay down here!”.

His voice happy and excited as usual, Papyrus understood that Alia was not a little puppy, nor she was a literal human baby, but she -was- a child who had fallen into the Underground and likely needed a place to stay, Papyrus seeming to be a bit stunned by Alia claiming she was twelve as his excited Soul swelled again happily.

Twelve was old for a human, right?? Judging at least by what he knew of the animals that occasionally fell into the Underground and others kept as pets that seemed like a pretty big number. Monsters didn’t age at the same rate humans did by any means, Papyrus being left with more questions than answers as he was thinking way too hard on all of this at once.

He could always just...ask her his many questions rather than simply assume though....?

Yes! That would be the best way to get to know Alia better and not invade the shy humans personal space! With what he had learned from Frisk and Mira, Pap would apply his learned intelligence about humans onto Alia and he was sure in no time he would be best friends with her too!

How on Earth did Sans cope with their strange habits though so easily? He just seemed to take it in stride that humans acted a certain way...and they did, but still...sometimes it made him wonder deeply about his sibling....

Alia was a bit surprised when Papyrus said he sensed she was uncomfortable with being hugged. That wasn't exactly the issue that had caused her to freak out, but she did appreciate him bringing it up rather than just moving on like nothing had happened. It would have been almost impossible for her to bring the topic up herself, so it was a relief she didn't have to. She also appreciated him saying she could tell him if she was uncomfortable; even if it would still be rather difficult for her to do so, it was a relief to know he at least wanted to avoid making her uncomfortable.

"Um, it wasn't really the hug, exactly... It was more being picked up unexpectedly. I, uh, would prefer not to be picked up like that anymore, please... Or at least can you ask me first?" Even though Papyrus had specifically said to tell him if she was uncomfortable, it was still awkward for her to actually do so. Nonetheless, she stuck with it, with Chara's encouraging smile giving her the determination to persevere. She felt better afterwards, though she didn't know if she'd be able to manage that again if she felt uncomfortable later on.

It was a relief that Papyrus seemed happy nonetheless, since Alia hadn't wanted to upset him by explaining she didn't like to be picked up unexpectedly. She felt like that was probably a somewhat unusual thing to be uncomfortable with, considering the way Papyrus hadn't seemed to think there would be any problems with doing so.

Alia was a little confused when Papyrus looked stunned to hear she was twelve. Yes, she was short, but she didn't think twelve seemed that much of a stretch, anyway... Perhaps it was just because Papyrus was so tall, that anyone as short as herself would seem like they must be a lot younger than they actually were? That might explain why he'd thought she was a baby at first. Though Sans was rather short compared to Papyrus, too, so surely he knew height didn't necessarily correlate with age, right...?

........

Chara was relieved that Papyrus had given Alia an opportunity to explain why she was uncomfortable. They felt better now, figuring he probably wouldn't suddenly pick her up anymore. They remained hovering nearby nonetheless, so they could offer support if she needed it.

Though, they felt like they were not really able to help much... They had not been able to stop him from picking Alia up in the first place, and would not be able to stop anyone else who might try it in the future. Being a ghost was rather inconvenient in that regard... At least Sans knew, now, and he would probably be able to step in to help Alia out.

.........

Sans could tell Papyrus was still a bit confused about humans, and figured it might be best to talk with him at some point, perhaps answer some questions if he could. At least he seemed to have realized Alia was uncomfortable, and was making an effort to figure out what was wrong. Sans smiled at him, knowing he'd take this into account for the future.

Truthfully, Sans didn't have any secret for how he befriended the humans; he simply treated them like anyone else. Papyrus had certainly come a long way from thinking humans were pets, but he still seemed to think he needed to treat them differently in some way or another.

Sans was glad to see Alia explaining what was wrong, rather than just acting like everything was fine. She seemed to be getting more comfortable with standing up for herself a bit, which was good.

"so, bro, i was showing alia some of your puzzles. would you like to explain one or two of them?" Sans figured maybe once Papyrus saw how clever Alia was, he'd treat her the same way he treated Mira, as a friend, rather than just 'a new human.'

Maybe it was the fact that he only had his knowledge of humans from the previous two that had fallen that was leaving Papyrus a bit clueless on how the best way to interact with a child who actually -spoke- was to be handled, Him having just gone off of instincts with Frisk seeing as the mostly mute child tended to go along with whatever he said or did.

He wasn’t intentionally attempting to make things weird between him and young Alia though, a light blush of orange appearing on his skull as the girl said she didn’t quite enjoy being picked up as much as others, Papyrus nodding intently as he took this into account and would be sure to stick by it.

“Right, right! I can assume that someone as small as you might be nervous being handled by someone as tall and great as me! I will proceed to keep you at ground level unless asked otherwise for your own comfort!”.

The skeletons perpetual grin seeming to grow a bit more with his focus going back onto things that might actually acclimate Alia to the Underground a little more, Papyrus was honestly quite, quite naive but it was all in good favor as he was not intentionally being awkward, him hurt having a lot to learn about just treating humans like he did monsters.

“Brilliant idea, brother! Surely Alia here will enjoy some puzzles! I’m sure she will be as smart as your human and figure them out in no time!”, Sans suggestion that he explain some puzzles to Alia seeming to go over more than well with Papyrus for obvious reasons, his unintentional reference to Mira being ‘Sans human’ was just that...entirely unintentional, it just being a reference to the fact that his brother had found Mira before anyone else , “Human...uh, Alia! Since my brother has shown you some of my amazing puzzles, which did you like best? They are quite difficult but perfectly solvable with patience!”.
