[[Okay. Cool. :)]]

A slight feeling of warmth and happiness that Aaron hadn't quite felt before sort of spread through him as she told him he wasn't that scary. Lilia was different, and he rather liked that about her. He smiled and decided that he would actually really try to keep her around as a friend. She seemed cool. Though, he was biting his lip slightly, wondering if his offer was maybe a bit too much for the first time. He did what he could to hide that unease.

When Lilia finally answered, he relaxed and exhaled softly. Smiling, he stood, roused Kida from her nap, and offered Lilia a hand, sort of silently offering to help her up and/or carry something for her. "I'm always free," he added with a slight shrug. It was true after all.

***

Voicemail. Damn. Keira sighed as Ciel's voice came through the phone speaker. How did she know it was voicemail right away? Simple enough. When one works with Ciel Blackthorn long enough, one comes to know those sorts of things. Typical Ciel voicemail message. She wasn't a fan. When the message tone finally beeped, she said, "Hi, Ciel. Look, sorry things went so badly earlier. Um, call me back if you get this. We need to talk." Not thinking of anything more she needed to say, she hung up and went to get a drink of water while she waited to see if he would call back.

Lilia returned his smile and reached out, accepting his offer and taking his hand to lift herself up from the ground. "Thank you." She said, dusting off the dirt from back of her skirt. "Well, that's great as I really hope that I'm not bothering you." She answered after reading what he had said about being free. Sighing with relief that she could talk with Aaron a while longer more, she skipped slightly out of happiness before leading him toward her home. Taking slightly a little off the main route, she walked down the little path that ended up further into the forest. "We like to keep to ourselves so my house is a bit further in the woods rather than anywhere in the town.." She said. "But don't worry, we aren't witches or any of those magical creatures." She joked to assure him. It was actually due to her "uniqueness" that they had to stay away so that she would not be picked on.
"So, did you studied in the local school?" She asked, slowing down so that she was walking alongside of him. Once a while, she would reach out to pet Kida on her head and gave her some nice loving strokes.

**
Ciel cursed lightly for his negligence, leaving an important document back at his office. With the night still young, he might as well return to retrieve it since he was a little enthusiastic in working on his project. With the car's engine roaring to life, he drove out of his driveway and toward the facility center.

He looked at the telephone on its stand, flashing light which signified that there was voicemail that he had to deal with. Pressing a button, he then sat down as to listen to the voicemail. Ciel perked up when he heard the familiar voice of his partner. "Funny how she would decide to call his office at this hour when she could just reach him from his mobile phone back home." He mumbled but then he thought, maybe she was still afraid of him.

Without another moment of hesitation, he reached out to dial and call back Keira. Ciel was slightly nervous while waiting for Keira to answer, the beeping sounds rang in his ear. He wondered what her responds would be.

Aaron listened and nodded with understanding as she spoke, telling him about why her house was so far in the woods. So far in the woods? Pfft. He wasn't afraid of the forest. Actually, the forest was his "friend", a place where he could hide out safely. Kida trotted behind them at ease, her tail swaying back and forth gently as she went. Though, it would wind up a little bit more every time Lilia reached back to pet her some. She seemed to have decided she really liked this girl, which Aaron was thankful about. Kida wasn't on a leash, not really needing one since she followed her master everywhere he went, or at least she'd try to.

"Study at a local school?" he repeated, looking blank for a moment. Then it clicked and he said, "Oh, right. Uh, sort of. I try to, though it doesn't always work out. I guess you could say I'm one of those 'bad kids'." He shrugged slightly and slipped his hands in his pockets as he thought about what he was telling her. Hopefully she wouldn't get mad at him or something like that and leave. It was nice having someone else around for once, even though Kida was pretty good company herself. "Yeah. I mean, sometimes things get a little hairy and I, er, skip out a little earlier... But other than that, yeah, I try. What about you?"

~~~~~~~~~
Keira, by this point, had been laying on her bed and reading a magazine about natural medicines and remedies. When her phone rang, she turned her head and looked to see who it was. She didn't answer it right away, putting down her magazine and rolling over to think about answering the phone before actually doing so. When she finally did, she took a deep breath, hit the answer button, and said, "Hello?"
((Sorry for the late reply. Was a little tied up with semester last time but now am free to reply. However, you have to excuse my rustiness since it has been a while since i write something lengthy))
Lilia watched over her shoulder, looking as Aaron spoke and told his tales. She reached out, patting gently on his shoulders to reassure him. "Well, i don't think you are all bad." She consoled, smiling at him. "Hairy?" She asked curiously but did not push him to answer since it was his secret to tell. Slightly bewildered by what he asked, she wondered what should she tell him. Would he discriminate her for being unable to hear? But Aaron was so nice that she had second thought about telling. She was slightly afraid but decided to go ahead.
"School is good.. I guess.. Well most of the times if the kids haven't been picking on me because.." She paused for a while. "Because of my lack in hearing.. I am born deaf, unfortunately." She continued, breathing heavily but felt slightly relief. She waited and watched for his reaction, expression or anything at all. "But I'm good at picking up what others said now by watching the movement of their mouth. Lips reading in short." Lilia added. The girl stopped shortly at the junction, one that led them back to the village or the other that led to where Lilia stayed.
****
Ciel waited, listening to the beeping sounds until Keira answered. He was suddenly attacked with nervousness when he heard her voice. Since when was he that afraid? "Hello Keira.. Look I'm sorry with what had happened. I know I wasn't supposed to do research on myself especially doing it behind your back but I'm just curious. Good news is I succeeded.. Anyway, I'm sorry for anything that had happened. It was the first time so I got a little out of control. I'm really sorry........." He continued to rumble away without giving a chance for Keira to talk.
[[Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. I've been so tied up with personal events myself that I actually really haven't been able to get on since the last time I posted. Or at least, not until now. So I feel like I should be the one apologizing for making you wait so long. :)
Also, I went and changed a bit of Keira's information...]]
Aaron tilted his head, slightly surprised by the contact. Her small question kind of went over his head for the time being. Not many people touched him, but he didn't necessarily mind. To show her he was all right, he gave her a small smile and then nodded, listening to what she said in response to his question.
She was picked on too? Hm. Maybe he had just found a friend. "Well," he said when she finished, "I don't really care what others think. You seem pretty cool to me." Aaron smiled and hesitated before gently patting her arm a little. He wasn't good in any social situation, but since it seemed like he had met a new friend, he tried. "Besides," he added, "Maybe you could teach me some things, like lip reading. Trust me, it's a useful skill." He stopped when she stopped and looked around. They were at a junction. He knew where he lived, of course, but he didn't know where she lived, and he wanted to keep his promise to walk her home.
Aaron said, "Well, we're at a junction. Which way do we go now?"
******
Keira swallowed and sat back a bit when Ciel's voice came through the speaker. How could she tell he was truly sorry? The way he was rambling. They had been partners long enough to get to know each other pretty well, and she knew that he was trying his best to make up for earlier. Knowing very well that he wasn't going to stop unless she said something, she cut in saying, "Ciel, Ciel, stop and listen to me. Okay?" She paused before continuing on. "Just listen. I overreacted when I should be sort of used to seeing stuff like that, but it was a bit of a surprise when it was you. You know it's against the regulations and that you could be severely punished for this. Not to mention, I'm your partner. It hurts that you'd go behind my back and do something like that without me. You could have at least told me."
She paused again and took a breath to let that sink in a bit. Then she went on to finish. "That being said, you're still my partner. While I don't totally agree with what you did, I want you to be safe. The idea of working with someone else at this point isn't that appealing. Plus, you're my friend. So, if you let me, I can help you. I can run tests, help keep you under control if needed, that kind of thing. What do you say?" Keira swallowed. She knew very well the risks she was taking, but it was worth it if it was for the sake of a friend's safety, even if that friend technically wasn't supposed to be doing anything like that in the first place.
((No worries.. Didn't wait too long plus I understand that RL is more important so just post a reply at your own pace unless you lose interest in this :lol: Currently I'm free until my studies commence in end of August.
And noted :D ))
She didn't dare to breath, holding her breath nervously as she waited for his response. Lilia was relief as she watched him speak, only staring at the movement of his mouth to know what he spoke. "Thank you. Flattery works every time." She was slightly overjoyed that she found someone who didn't care about her disability. Other would often regard her as burdensome for not being able to hear. Lilia was surprised when Aaron patted her since no one else have touch her before but she didn't pull away. Somehow, it felt....nice. "Look at us..We're consoling each other." She chuckled softly. "Useful in observing uninvited conversation." Lilia joked, smiling at him. "But yes, if you want to. It's really easy but just need years of practice. " She continued, deliberately emphasizing on years.
"Come on then." She said, walking down the path on the right which will lead them to her house while the other path will lead them toward the town. "It won't be far after that." She assured, although it would be a little tricky to find her house. Lilia took a smaller path that branched from the main road before maneuvering through the dense forest. It took about 5-10 minutes for them to reach her house, a little wooden cottage of blue rooftop in the middle of nowhere. "Here we are. Home sweet home." She announced. Albeit the cottage was made out of woods, it was sturdy enough to withstand any weather throughout the years. Different flowers grew, be it planted or wild, surrounding the sides of the house. Lilia could see light streaming out of the window which mean her mum was back from work. "Would you be alright going back home?" She asked, even though she would much like to invite him in but night soon befall them. Any longer now and his parents would grow worried.
**** **** **** ****
Ciel didn't know how long he spoke until he heard Keira's voice loud and clear to shut up. He immediately stopped and listened, breathing nervously. He was slightly troubled and managed to calm down by the end of her conversation. "Okay, first of all.. I know the risk if i include you and i don't want you to lose everything because of my selfish desire. You're the most talented, clever, level-headed person i ever meet and so I didn't want to gamble and lose a cool partner." He explained. He wanted but hesitant to include the word "beautiful". It sounded wrong, sounded more like a confession that anything. "Anyway, I just want to make sure I get everything right. It seems wrong to risk the life of our patients for any of our mistaken." Ciel added. He was still slightly overjoyed with the fact that the concoction worked out well, better than expect which was too close for comfort.
"Seeing that you've already found out. It's your choice to whether continue working with me." Even with that being said, he was seriously hopping that Keira would still stay as his partner. He really appreciate all those help that she had given him for their experiment and certainly she would be a huge help for the rest of the project. "The boss finding out is the least of our problem. You could get hurt, you know. I'm still an uncontrollable beast."
[[That's awesome. I'm glad you understand, since not everyone does. And yeah, the same pretty much goes for me. I'm free until my studies resume at the end of August. During the fall, winter, spring, and first few weeks of summer next year, I'll probably only get to get on a few times a week, if not maybe a few times a month, unfortunately. I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying this and don't plan on dropping it any time soon, even if we are a little slow to reply at times.
Also, I saw your idea on your forms post. I like it. Let's get our characters past the sort of introduction stage, say, maybe in the next 3 posts or so, and then we can get to the fun part: when they start to change. I'll have notes on that either on my forms post or the first post.]]
Aaron smiled. She reacted well to his pat, as awkward as it was. But it seemed that she didn't mind, almost like she knew what he was going through. From the sounds of it, she did understand, which was nice. Smiling at her comment, he said, "I try," with a slight shrug. While they were standing there, Kida had gone and layed down in a grassy patch between the two roads, waiting for the two to end their conversation and move on. Aaron nodded and laughed a little as Lilia joked about what it could be useful for. Shrugging slightly once more, Aaron said, "I'm patient." It was strange. He had just met her only an hour or two ago, and already it felt like he was trying to make excuses to see her again. Maybe he was just that desperate for a human friend.
When Lilia started walking, he nodded and followed her, only a quarter of a step behind her. Kida saw them start moving again and got up, continuing to follow them. The rest of their walk was pretty quiet, but Aaron didn't mind. He was enjoying every moment, being with another person for once that didn't immediately judge and hate him. When they reached her house and he heard her say 'home sweet home', he looked up at it. "Wow. Nice place," he said. His house didn't look nearly as nice. While his parents were nice people, they were often at work or busy doing other things. Now that he's older, they haven't been around much due to their jobs, and so his house had faded paint, weeds in the front and back yard, etc. because there was no time for upkeep.
Aaron blinked and glanced at Lilia, almost missing her quiet question. "What? Oh, yeah. I'll be all right." He smiled at her, deciding not to tell her he wouldn't be missed all that much. His dad was a pilot, so he was really only home on his layovers or days off, and on those days, he was often sleeping and resting. His mother was a party planner, so she was often off at various parties and sleeping when she was home. Reaching down, Aaron patted Kida on the head. "We'll be fine." He wasn't sure what else to do, so he kind of nodded and said, "Well, um, goodnight, I guess. See you around." Then he turned and started walking back the way he came.
*****
Keira listened as Ciel talked on the other side of the line. She knew he couldn't see her expressions, but if he did, he probably would have stopped soon after he talked about knowing the risk of including her. The look on her face and in her eyes would have told him that she didn't care about risks and would have rather been included from the very start. However, she didn't say anything and just continued to let him talk. She tried to resist the urge to chuckle a small bit when he talked about still being an 'uncontrollable beast'.
When he finally finished, she said, "Of course I would still like to work with you. You're the best partner, and not to mention, a really good friend. I just wish you would have included me from the start." Keira paused to clear her throat for a moment, and then she continued. At the same time, she got up and headed downstairs to get a drink. "However, never mind that. What's done is done, and it's in the past. What we should look toward now is the future. That's something we can still change. By now, we both know I've had plenty of experience with uncontrollable beasts." She opened the cabinet and grabbed a glass, holding the phone to her ear with her shoulder. Memories from some of their previous experiments flashed through her mind as she poured in ice and water.
There was the time that one bear skin-changer had gotten loose, one of the early experiments before they had figured out how to have the subject keep its human mind and intelligence when in its animal form. Another time was when the boa constrictor skin-changer had gone on a bit of a rampage and constricted a few of the scientists. That hadn't ended well. And, well, she decided not to even think about that incident with the moose. The point was, she had plenty of experience. "So?" Keira asked after she took a sip of water. "Will you let me in, and can we still be partners?"
Yep.. And I'd check your notes too.. Good ideas so i can't wait till we get to the fun part. :smirk: ))
Lilia was slightly relief that Aaron would be able to find his way back since he took his time to come all this way to her house. Besides, Kida should be able to lead him back. Dogs had good sense of smell after all. Even though she was unable to determine someone from the way they spoke because she can't hear their tone but she had observed people long enough to see their body action and reaction. For some reason, she could feel that Aaron wasn't as upbeat as before, in daze for a while before reacting to her question as if he was thinking something. It was as if he doesn't want to go home but that was impossible right?
She bit her lips gently, hesitating and stopped. Lilia wanted to just stop him and invited him inside but somehow she felt wrong. He just meet her after all. Maybe next time would be better but only if she would be able to see him again. "See you again, Kida." She said, casting a half-grin at her as she patted her on the head and watched as she rejoined her owner.
"Good night and see you around.. Be careful." She said, louder than her usual voice.
**** ****
Ciel was seriously grinning happily behind the phone when he was being flattered. Best partner was all he thought until she finished talking and questioned him. However, he did listen... even though his mind wasn't into it. "All those experiences and you still freaked out." He joked but decided not to push his luck further with those bad memory that happened earlier. Anyway, he didn't remember much except for the look on Keira's face after he regained control.. Fear. He couldn't remember what he did as a tiger but Ciel suspected that there would be a lot of biting and clawing.
He cleared his throat and answered "Yes and of course."
Without her help, he wouldn't be able to change back to human after shifting into a smilodon so he wasn't about to lose his best partner. But somehow, he could feel the awkwardness between them for a couple of days but even then, he was sure Keira would work professionally. "Well, i guess that is all.. The secret i mean. No more, i promise." He quickly added. Ciel pulled away from the phone momentarily to yawn, his eyes were watery and heavy. Shifting into a sabre-tooth cat really leave him exhausted.
"So, anything else to be confronted?"
Aaron paused to wait for Kida as she enjoyed one last pet from the girl. "I will, thanks," he said with a nod to Lilia. Once Kida rejoined with him, he turned and continued walking back toward home. The walk was pretty quiet, but it was nice. "So, what did you think?" he asked Kida as they arrived at the junction again. She paused to scratch and then shook a little, but wagged her tail. Aaron smiled. "Yeah, I liked her, too." He continued walking down the road again. From here, it was about 10 minutes, but Aaron didn't really mind.
Ten minutes later, Aaron arrived home. He pulled out his key and let himself in the house, Kida running in before him. After entering and closing the door behind him, he walked into the kitchen. On his way, he passed the sitting room, where Kida was already curled up in her pile of blankets in the one corner, deep asleep. When he entered the kitchen, Aaron found a note on the fridge from his mum that read: Have another party to attend tonight, be home soon. Love, Mum. No surprise there. He grabbed an apple off the counter and washed it before heading back into the living room, eating it. Lilia. Hopefully he'd see her again. She seemed like a nice person, and it would be nice to have a human friend he could talk to. Deciding to go and look at the stars, Aaron headed out the back door and sat down with his back to a tree, watching the sky. Before long, without meaning to, he fell asleep.
****
Keira was sitting on the couch now with a blanket wrapped around her, the glass of water sitting on the table next to her. There was a lamp on the table as well, casting a soft golden glow into the room since it was the only one on at the moment. Brushing her hair back since it wasn't in its normal pony tail, she smiled slightly at Ciel's joke. "In my defense, I had no idea I was going to run into an extinct cat rather than a human." It was true, and if she had known what she might have been walking into, she might not have been so badly surprised. Either way, like she said, it was in the past.
She nodded as he promised no more secrets, though again, she knew that he really couldn't see her. It wasn't Skype. When he asked if there was anything else, she replied, "Nope, I don't think so. Oh, and I heard that." She added the last bit, having heard him yawn despite the fact that the phone had been pulled away in an attempt to keep her from hearing the yawn. "Get some rest and I'll see you tomorrow. Okay?"
Lilia waited and watched as they walked away until she can't see them anymore. She then turned her heels and walked toward the house, knocking on the wooden door before letting herself in. "I'm home." She said but received no reply. Walking over to their small living room, she was relief to see her mother fast asleep, curling on the couch. Her mother was probably tired from working too long. Kneeling down beside of her, Lilia then took the fallen blanket and draped it onto her mother. "Thanks mum." She mumbled before walking over to the dining table." Eat before it gets cold" She read the note that was left there with her dinner.
After dinner, she went to her bedroom which she shared it with her mum. "Time to eat medicine." She recalled, taking the bottle on her table and took out 2 tablets. With a glass water she got from the kitchen, she gulped down the bitter medication and flushed it with water. It was supposed to make her hearing better but so far, everything was still same. Total silence. But at least it was free since it was the testing period and so they were no burden by the bills or anything.
Deciding to get some fresh air, she went out to watch the starry night sky. Leaning against the trunk of the tree, she recalled how much fun it was today. Kida was so cute and friendly but her newly-found friend was the one on her mind. "Aaron" She smiled, wishing that they would be able to meet again soon. Lilia didn't put her trust on others but somehow she think she could if it him. Aaron was nice and didn't judge her because of her disability which was a good thing. For once, she wished that she could hear...so that she could hear his voice.
*** *** ***
"Fine.. Reason accepted." He said but now that Keira mentioned it, Ciel couldn't believe that he was able to shift into an extinct feline since, well they were practically extinct. He was able to obtain a sample of the fossil and thought that maybe he could try to see if it worked... and it did! Ciel was glad they were having a normal conversation right now. He couldn't imagine if he was to lose this partner.
