February 2016 contest - Culinary Show-off

Post by Morgaln »

The halls are adorned with thousands of lights, streamers, flags, and lanterns patterned in bright red paper in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Confetti floats through the air, suspended by magical wind, swirling around the room and the crowd of students inside. Some students are departing for home to spend time with their families, but others crowd around to watch the nian dancers and their namesake companions competing in the Grand Hall. Music and chatter fill the air, as does the smell of delicious food for the feast tonight.

The servers from the kitchens bring out platters of dumplings, moon cakes, and candies to offer students. As the final nian dance subsides, the performers retiring to their rooms with a cacophony of applause, some senior arkai students clear an area in the middle of the floor and set off some special firelights they’ve been working on. Most of them are gold, small enough to burst into light within the Grand Hall’s vaulted ceilings without worry, but one of them, red in color, turns and angles sideways, circling the room as it flies, the sparks forming themselves into the figure of a Valcerian dragon.

As the dragon firelight subsides, bursting into pieces of glitter and confetti, a man in a rather drab apron but a festive hat steps up to the speaking podium at the end of the room. In a voice magically amplified, he says to the waiting crowd, “Greetings, magi of the Keep! I hope you all are having a nice time with the celebrations.” You squint and realize you’ve seen the man before as Chef Pristone, the head chef in the kitchens. He beams, continuing, “The Lunar New Year Feast will begin in an hour, but before we all settle in to eat, I have a special request to make of you.

“I’ve heard much over the past year about the students travelling around the western part of the world, and tales of the delicious food they’ve tried there. My duties at the Keep prevent me from travelling much, but I would love to learn some of these recipes myself. With the festivities at hand, I think this is the perfect opportunity for you to share some of your own culture, and try some delicious meals at the same time. In honor of the occasion, I’d like to host a contest; prepare a dish with some sort of importance to you, either a traditional family meal, a favorite treat, or something signifying luck and good fortune. If you write the recipe along with the dish, I’ll taste each one, and offer my favorite a prize. The meals can be of any sort and come from anywhere in the world, as long as they have some sort of significance to you. With that, enjoy the celebrations!”
