January 2016 contest: Enchant an item

This time of year the dining hall is filled with pastries and sweet treats fresh from the kitchens, and students are constantly shuffling through to sneak a few platefuls up to their dorms. A few remain behind, playing games or reading books next to the large dining hall fireplace. You and a friend have just gathered two small dishes of sweets said to be made from a Foenaran recipe, and are just heading back to your room when you overhear a student say, “Do you think they all have to have transformative powers? I’ve not taken any transformation classes yet.”

Intrigued, you quickly chew the cinnamon-sugar lemon sticking partway out of your mouth and rush over to see what the student is talking about. She and four others are huddled around one end of the tables, with their newly hatched creatures peeking between elbows or standing on shoulders to get a look at what the students are crowded around. They all looked to be a few years younger than you, but despite that they seem to have amassed a rather sizeable hoard of treasures from the recent holiday quest. There are other items, too, though, ones you’ve never seen before, and some of which look only half-finished. The girl who spoke before covers up a piece of folded paper that looks like a tanzerin when she notices you looking at it.

“It’s not done yet,” the girl says, looking down at her hands.

“It’s okay, I was only curious,” you say. “What are you working on?”

The other students reach out to shyly cover their own projects from view. The girl pipes up again. “We were trying to make our own items,” she says, gesturing at the treasures.

Your friend, realizing what’s going on, grins and says, “I think that’s a great idea. Did you guys ever read that big tome in the library, the one that mentions the transformative items?” A few of the group nod their heads slowly. Your friend continues, “Well, the original items were made in a contest over two hundred years ago. Maybe it’s time we revitalized that tradition. What would you guys say to an item-designing contest?”
