.: Just Another Day :. a magistream story

.: Just Another Day :.
Hello, and welcome to my story!

'Just Another Day' is a Magistream Story based around an old OC of mine. I'll be using this first post as sort of a Lore keepsake, where world building and backgrounds are stored and updated as the story continues.

The second post will contain more character history, for a better understanding of who you're reading about! This will only host human histories, and only with the characters I own.

The third post will contain the story's table of contents, and a small update log. After that, it'll be story posts! You're more than free to comment and post after a chapter has been made (: If you have any questions you can always PM me and I'll be happy to answer them there.

--- & ---

Worldbuilding Bullets:
Spoiler
o. No one is pure Magi. It takes generations upon generations of Magi-blood to be strong enough to produce someone considered "pure magi", and pure magi isn't something to be proud of.
o. Any Magis regardless of their blood lineage will either receive their Keep Letter on their 15th birthday, or come into possession of it through 'Desemnare' which is a similar to The Hunger Games' 'Reaping'.
o. Magi's aren't able to enter their Keep or live at their designated Keep until they've received their Letter or have been selected to do so.
o. The Magistream world (Nehkra) moves differently than on Earth. No one knows how much different, some don't experience a shift in time at all.
o. Magi's are only allowed to live in their Keep for a maximum of two Nehkra years at a time, which is why most Magi families remain on Earth.
--- Some Magi are able to 'bind' themselves to the Nehkra, but it requires things no one is willing to speak of.
o. Each Magi is born with a little bit of selective magic. Tiny traces of it that can be strengthened and built upon once they're able to live full time at their Keep.
o. The world is expansive and so very lonely, and there aren't enough books or explorers to fill in the blanks about it. There are no cities, you are a Keep onto your own. Other Magi's visiting is unheard of unless they're seeking riches, creatures or worse.
Expanding on the 'Desemnare'
Spoiler
If you don't receive your letter, you're automatically entered into the Desemnare. Twice a year, once during the Spring Equinox and the Winter Equinox, a letter from Thane will be sent out to only two Magi's, and they'll have to go to their Keep immediately in order to keep up with those who have already received their letter, as there is much to learn and teach with their generation of Magi. They'll have exactly 24 hours to collect, gather and sort any belongings with their respective parents/guardians, and once those 24 hours are up, they're sent to their Keep for the designated two years.
Expanding on Keeps:
Spoiler
Keeps are generally huge fortresses much like the one seen in the banner. No one knows how they're made, if they're created by magic or humans, or if they simply pop up, or move around when a Magi passes on. Some are stylized a little differently. Some look like watch towers, others look like castles, others are simply built into whatever environment, grown in over time. Some Keeps are kept in families, passing down from generation to generation whenever possible. Some keeps are new, and unfamiliar and absolutely need a Magi to tame them. All Keeps are different, but all Keeps are meant to home and shelter their selected Magi.

.: Character Keep :.
Lilah Ambrose, 21.
Spoiler
Lilah is the daughter of two Magi, putting her in the contender to establish the beginning of a pure Magi bloodline. She never received her letter much to the shock of her parents, who have been quietly trying to pull strings behind the scenes for her for most of her life. Lilah has a touch of Shadow magic, much to the delight of her mother, who's specializes in Shadowwork for the Magi. Lilah is terrified of bugs, and as a Magi works mainly with hatchlings. Her Keep is stationed 10 miles from the Stream (~2hr walking distance) and she goes twice a week to collect eggs when possible, but having a Keep-full of ambitious and sneaky Hatchlings doesn't always give her time to get away.

--------------------------------------

The sun was finally beginning to set on one of the warmest days in Nehkra. A brunette strides onto the platform of her Keep, the tall double doors held open as she cups her hands around her mouth and speaks. “C’mon you lot, we don’t have all night. Your food will be eaten by the others!” Lilah calls, smiling as her voice carries across the valley. These were her darlings. Of course, all of her creatures were her darlings, but these ones were just a little more dear to her heart. Often, those who made their home in the valley were hurt, injured, unable to return to the Packlands or the Ridge or back into The Beyond. She hears a familiar Hydra scream, her little ones howling behind her. A flutter of wings, and the sensation of claws along her back and up to her shoulder make Lilah smile as Tazhona finds her perch.

Master, someone has left eggs on your Keep stairs.’ Tazhona hums, their Bondspeak warm in Lilah’s mind.

Lilah frowns. “Another one? Isn’t there another Keep-

Not for another fifteen miles north, Lilah.’ Answers Tazhona, nuzzling the human before taking off, most likely to start herding the incoming creatures a little faster. Lilah sighs, smiles, and motions for the creatures ambling towards her to follow her into the massive overhand she had carved against the lower floors of her Keep. She knew that not all of them would come back to her. Some she released into the Valley made their way past her protective barriers and past the Ridge. Her Hydra’s, hatched and handled from birth all took that way too, except for the Water Hydra. It remained as a protective guardian to those living by the riverbanks. Her Cyon and Wolf packs lived just beyond the stretch of her call, too. She missed them, but every day gave her the chance to retrieve and rescue eggs and hatchings from the stream.

Ikley flew overhead, the only Feather Drake Lilah had hatched a few months prior. They grew quickly, much to the displeasure of the Magi. ‘Lilah, it’s growing dark.’ The Feather Drake sung, the same warmth shared with Tazhona in their Bondspeak. It was common knowledge that once night hit, there were things out there that specifically hunted the Magi.

I know, I’m just waiting on one more.” Lilah calls, squinting to hopefully see her familiar lumbering friend.

She’s not coming tonight.’ Ikley tells her. ‘The Rekantum, correct?

Lilah feels her stomach tighten. “She’s okay, right?

She’s just fine. She’s seeking more like her.’ Ikley says, swooping down to chase the last of the group in. The golden sunlight has fallen beyond the mountain range, casting long dark shadows across the land, creeping towards the Keep. Ikley feels the prickling of sadness in her Magi’s bond, and spins back up to face her human, hopeful that some time spent with the hatchlings will cheer her up. ‘Come inside, Lilah. You’ve done your part.

The human nods, gives one last final sweep of the area for anymore stragglers, before she walks down towards her Keep stairs, picking up the two small eggs left abandoned there. She had two more sitting near the fire while she handled the nightly routine, so what was two more in the scheme of things? Lilah cradles them gently, and walks up the flight of stairs to take them into the Keep, grateful for the ones who abandon their eggs on her steps.

.: Chapter 1, six years ago.

--------------------------------------

“Lilah! Dinner’s ready!” A warm motherly voice floated up the stairs.

15 year old Lilah Ambrose sat with her back to the bedroom door, an old, wide book open between her crossed knees, hands on either side flattened out. She was murmuring, eyes closed. Her bedroom was cozy and filled to the brim with a mis-match of assorted toys, books, and knick-knacks. Typical of a fifteen year old, her laptop sat open on a desk across from her twin sized bed, a website similar to wikipedia sitting stagnant on ‘Shadowwork’.

“Lilah!” Came the call again.

“...Altreus Tyrid!” Lilah gasped just a second later, eyes flying open as the words on the page in front of her disappeared slowly, sinking into the page as if they had never existed. She squealed, clapped her hands, and spread them across the empty pages a few seconds later, the words returning with the heat of her palms. “Yes!” Lilah whispered, overly pleased with herself. She moved to stand, heaving the big book up into her arms to place it onto her bed. As she did, reaching for her grey plushy house robe, her bedroom door cracked open.

“Lilah, your mother has called you twice now.” Her father stated, leaning his head in. “You know better.”

The teenager winced. “Sorry Dad!”

“Don’t be sorry, come down when you’re called.” His voice wasn’t cold and stern, but there was a firm undertone that Lilah knew better than to fight. “C’mon now. Time to put the book away and come down for your birthday dinner.” His tone changed, and his face changed with the appearance of a proud smile. Lilah’s heart thumped behind her rib cage. He knew something she didn’t. As he left, closing the door behind him, Lilah gave another silent squeal before she throw her robe on and hurried downstairs after him.

“Sorry Mom, I was working on my spellwork.” Lilah said as way of apology, skidding into the kitchen to clamber into her seat at the table.

Lilah’s mother hummed a response back to her daughter, bringing over the platter of rice, cheese and meat to set in the middle. “That’s alright sweetness.” Desiree Ambrose was a Shadow Magi, her work noted and studied. “Today is a special day, I just don’t want anything to be wrong for you.” She smoothed her hand across the back of her daughter’s head, fingertips brushing through her hair. “It’s not every day my daughter turns fifteen!”

Turning fifteen was a big deal for Magi. It was the day you received your Keep letter, your welcome into the world where you were destined to be. Or, it was the day your name was placed into the Desemnare, a lottery-type collection where those who weren’t blessed with Magi-blood had a chance to become one. Lilah nodded, smiling. Her parents were both offspring to two half-Magis, and when they had her, Lilah was one of the very few children born to be as close to ‘pure Magi’ as they could get. She wouldn’t live long enough to see her line produce a pure magi.

Dinner was always a quiet affair and finally, it was time for cake. Her parents sang Happy Birthday and placed the single tier chocolate cake decorated with candles in front of her. “Make a wish, darling.” Her father coaxed, one arm around his wife, the other stuffed in his pocket.

“Don’t tell us!” Her mother smiled, leaning against her husband. “Just concentrate on the shadow in the flame, send your wish to Thane, and blow them away.”

Lilah squeezed her eyes closed, silently sent her wish to Thane, and with a big inhale finally blew her candles out, sending their little kitchen into darkness.

.: Chapter Two [still six years previous]

--------------------------------------

“I can’t believe it!”

“I spoke to Belmos, he said it would be here-”

“Our daughter has to receive her Keep letter!”

Lilah laid in bed for the second day in a row, arms wrapped around the tiny stuffed animal she had held onto since she was an infant. Her Keep letter didn’t appear the night of her birthday. It also didn’t appear the following morning with the breakfast post, or this morning, when her father went to check her mailbox, even though they all knew it would simply just be there. Was she being entered into the Desemnere? She had to be. There was no other option- she was supposed to get a Keep!

She moved, sitting up in her bed as she placed her stuffed animal on her pillow. “I should talk to Mom.” Lilah told no one in particular, sighing slightly before she headed out of her bedroom. Her mom had friends in high positions, as did her father. There was no way she wouldn’t at least be entered into the Desemnere! Rubbing a hand along her eyes Lilah padded her way down the stairs and into the kitchen, reaching first for the cupboard to grab herself a glass.

“Lilah!” Her mother chirped, any trace of worry or stress wiped from her face as she looked at her daughter. “Are you okay, sweetness?”

Lilah nodded. “I’m okay… Sad, I think.”

“That’s normal to feel that way.” Said her father, nodding solemnly from his position at the table, a mess of letters scattered around him. “Belmos should be receiving the first of many letters I’ve been writing.”

“As long as he can get me into the Desemnere,” Lilah replied, but the once fleeting feeling of hope was giving away to typical teenage angst. There was probably a better young Magi-in-training who deserved her spot in the lotto. There was probably a bunch of other children of Magi who deserved it more than she did. Collecting her glass Lilah got some ice from the freezer, went to the tap and filled it up. The silence was deafening. Normally the house was filled with conversations, shouted across rooms or floors. Seeing their daughter this crestfallen was heartbreaking.

“Lilah, sweetheart.” Her father said softly, rising from his chair to walk over to her, placing his hand on her shoulder. “You’ll get a spot in the Desemnere, I swear it.”

“Sweetness all you need to focus on is your Shadowwork, okay?” Came her mother’s happy suggestion, crossing her arms at the table as she beamed at her family. “The spring equinox is only a week away. You have plenty of time, Lilah.”

The teenager heaved a sigh, nodding. Her parents were right. There was no use sulking around the house and feeling sorry for herself. She had shadow magic to work on and she had her parents at her side. Seven days wouldn’t take too long, and she would be entered into the Desemnere. “I’m going to watch a movie in my bedroom.” Lilah told her parents, turning to hug her father who still hadn’t moved. “Thank you.”

“Anytime, darling.” He kissed the top of her head, letting her go so she could walk over and hug her mother.

“I love you.”

“I love you too, Mom.” Lilah replied with a smile, taking her water with her as she headed back to her bedroom. Before she closed her bedroom door, she pressed her ear out into the hallway, listening to the soft voices of her parents once again.

“We won’t get a reply from Belmos for at least another day, but I’ll also reach out to Aderyn as well.” Her father said, his chair creaking as he sat back down in it. The sound of his glasses hit the table gently. “Berlon’s also a good idea to reach out to. He always liked you better than me. Maybe he’ll sponsor Lilah.”

“Sponsor? Do you really think we have the time to do all of this for her?” Came her mother’s voice. She sounded tired, stressed.

“We have to. Our daughter can’t wait another six months for her chance.”

Lilah felt her heart drop behind her ribs. Six months? She couldn’t wait. Closing her door with a quiet snap, she put her water down on her desk, pulled some paper from the drawer, and sat down in her desk chair. Rummaging for a pen, she found one before she put it down to the paper, the words falling quickly: ‘Dear Master Belmos’...

Hello everyone! I hope we're liking the chapter/s so far. I have the majority of the story planned out and ready to be written, it's just going to take me some time to get there. I won't be sticking to a strict schedule because that'll lead to burnout, but I am optimistically hoping to update once every two week at MOST. Thanks yall! <3

.: Chapter Three, current day.

--------------------------------------

Lilah rests in the overstuffed armchair, a fire crackling in her hearth. The two abandoned eggs lay in identical blanket nests. Her Bestiary says they’re a Light Minicorn egg and a Yuaxu egg. The Light Minicorn will have a spot in her stables, with fresh hay and friends in the form of the little herd Lilah had been collecting. The Yuaxu on the other hand… “Lilah?” Ikley murmured, coming in to rest across the lounger. Her soft pink feathers were shining iridescent, the flames from the fire casting an orange glow onto them. “We’ve never hatched a Yuaxu before.”

“I know,” Lilah sighs, rubbing her temple. “I don’t know how they eat, if they eat other creatures, if they can survive on my Keep lands.” The idea of a Yuaxu just running around without the guidance of a Magi-

“Should we have Tazhona send messages to Keeps closer to us?” Ikley asks, settling herself down into the lounger. Lilah smiles. It seems like the Feather Drake was taking up her roost as Egg Watcher once more. “They might know how to handle a Yuaxu.”

Lilah shook her head, looking back down to the eggs by her herth, the golden horn of the Minicorn a warm sight against the shaking and trembling of the darker, scaly egg of the Yuaxu. “I’ll make the trip myself tomorrow. I better go and pack up.” Immediately the Magi felt overwhelmed with the idea of travelling. The nearest Keep was about fifteen miles by foot, which wasn’t all that far to begin with. It was about a five hour trip without the aid of her friends, but… Between her Keep and the next laid the Stream and the beginning of a mountain range. Lilah walked away from the warmth of the living room and the fire, allowing Ikley to rearrange the eggs to her liking. She would need water, provisions and maybe it was better to draft a message first to alert the Keep owner of her arrival-

“Lilah.”

It was the Diodia, Lilah’s latest acquired Keep Guardian. The Ferrofluid Crystalwing had arrived injured and near her end at the peak of Nehkra’s harshest winter. It was a fluke that she had been found, Ikley struggling to carry the creature inside the keep to warm up and heal. Lilah smiled at her friend, reaching her hand out to let the Crystalwing’s clawed paw rest on the bend of her wrist. “Yes, Diodia?”

“I would like to travel with you.”

“You heard that?” Lilah asks, tilting her head.

“Yes. Your Keep walls are thick but I have exceptional hearing.”

Hm. “I could use the company, and the sunlight would do you good.”

Diodia hums in delight, a gurgle in the back of her black oozy throat. “Thank you. We shall leave at dawn.” Without warning the Crystalwing simply melted and rearranged herself, her tail dragging behind her. Lilah nodded her agreement to the retreating creature, beginning to walk the long trek back to her private wing of the Keep. The trip would be interesting to say the least, and frankly the urge to travel had been itching too long in the back of her mind. Dawn. It simply couldn’t come quickly enough.

Hello!! I hope everyone enjoys the update, and doesn't mind the flipping between time. It's important to Lilah's development. Also, if anyone would like to suggest their Keep/character to the one Lilah will be meeting, please feel free to post here or to message me! Thanks! <3
