Why Black Cats are Hated

Poking his small, furry head through the door, which was slightly ajar, the lithe black tienko padded into the room. All was quiet, the sounds of steady breathing coming from two doors.

He was curious, and wanted to know what exactly the house might offer (other than the delicious scent of cooking fish plugging his nostrils). The feline carefully pushed the door open, but stopped abruptly when a creaking sound emitted from the hinges that alerted the beings in the room. A loud yell came from a previously sleeping human, a large white thing flying off his body. Turning tail to run, the cat bounded toward the other room, not paying attention to surroundings, too frightened to comprehend anything but the situation.

Shooting underneath the bed, he crashed into the wall and lay trembling. Another scream came from directly above, and the unnamed cat froze in fear, fur standing on end, back arched like the fronds of waving dandelion he so loved to play with.

A shape darted in, flickering in and out, and his first reaction was to run out through the gap it left on the right side. Determined, the cat leapt at the opening, hissing as fiercely as he could and trying to appear threatening.

As soon as he slipped out of the bed, his eyes were blinded by bright lights shining into his yellow eyes normally accustomed to the darkness of night. Screeching, his claws dug into the first thing that it reached-something small and furry. A high-pitched gasp sounded from his right.

A dark crimson smile opened on the white throat of the thing his claws were in, who gave a cry of pain and slumped over on his pelt. Red liquid dripped down onto the clean white floor.

When the stream of blood became a trickle, someone shrieked again and a silver item embedded itself a millimeter away from the cat’s skin. Black fur floated gently, spiraling and turning, until it met the surface.

A barrage of silver knives flew at him, and the black tienko yowled in fear, running straight out the door. As soon as the fresh air hit his nose, he visibly relaxed and slunk away into the bushes, never knowing that he had killed a mage's rabbit, never knowing that he caused years of suffering, and never knowing that he had caused the downfall of a once-rich family by killing their only source of joy.

~*~*~*~

Five years later…

Under a flowering cherry blossom tree, there were two people in rags kneeling on the soft verdant grass. There were tears streaking down their faces, and soot decorated their skin.
Directly in front of them was a stone of smooth white marble. There were engravings on it that signified something important…

In Loving Memory of Fluffy

our amazing prize Kamar Rabbit.

She brought smiles to every face

and was a wonderful familiar

until the dreadful day in which she was killed by a black demon.

We shall remember you always.

“Happy Halloween, Fluffy. Happy death day…”

“Black Tienkos…bad luck. Forever.”

...and that's not really a very satisfying ending, for anyone involved...too bad the poor little Tienko couldn't have somehow saved the day and taken the rabbit's place in the family's hearts.
