I do my best but the talk text drives me up a wall. My sister loves to use it when texting on the phone. Most times I sit and have to think about what is being said and if I have to think to long I give up.
An I am not the best on normal grammar or spelling. Comes with some of my medical issues.

So I was just curious about Magistream's opinions on bad grammar. And no, I don't mean like with dyslexic people; I know they can't help it. I even have a friend with it. I mean text talk, mostly. Or people who don't like fixing their grammar mistakes.

I myself am a bit of a grammar Nazi. I despise text talk and people who can't stop misspelling things. I am a perfectionist.

You don't have to say why you dislike it, but perhaps why it doesn't bother you, if that's the case.
I relate to this so much! I just don't understand why it's so hard to spell things out.
Punctuation doesn't bother me as much as spelling does - to some extent. I don't like when people don't use commas at least, I still like neat sentences and whatnot. But misspellings of things like they're, there, and their really bug me. :sulk:

I think shorthand if used sparingly or when you don't have much time to convey important information (for example in ToS) is a nice way to shorten messages, but overdoing it shows laziness over anything else. Proper language in work situations like literature is not debatable, but trying too hard to attack those using chat-speak or making typos could be seen as ableist in certain circumstances. All I really have to say past that is, don't EVER use run-on sentences.

The only thing that bothers me is when people confuse "they're" and "their" or type "his" instead of "he's", and generally just absolutely raging grammar mistakes, though I understand some people aren't the best in English so I usually don't mention it. It also bothers me when people use "she or he", "she/he" or "s/he" instead of "they", though I don't know if it's considered a grammar error but it's definitely harder for me to read and less aesthetically pleasing than simply using "they" instead.
Simple misspellings I don't mind, I'm myself not a native English speaker and so I do a lot of mistakes especially considering I'm dyslexic, though I do appreciate when people correct my grammar because it helps me learn. I also have problems constructing proper sentences. I have the same problems in my native language, idk man being dyslexic sucks ass. Though I have a web extension that checks my grammar and it helps a lot. Unfortunately, it only had British English and American English options so I have to somehow manage in my native language. The worst thing is learning grammar is incredibly hard for me and I didn't really read any books as a child so that made it even worse, it was simply too frustrating and hard for me, now though that I'm reading more my grammar improved, it's still not perfect but I'm getting there. ^.^

It really depends on the situation for me! In places like internet forums or microblogging platforms, it's not a huge deal. I have my own pet peeves regarding "irregardless" and the like, but in such a casual atmosphere it's not worth nitpicking. Maybe one day it will be recognized as an actual word, and then I will no longer have to grouse about it. Some people just want to get their thoughts out as quickly as possible, and that's just fine. Personal blog posts do not have a grading scale.

If you are somewhere that necessitates proper grammar in the written word (writing published novels, news articles, college essays), then it becomes far more important to watch your syntax. People are quite eagle-eyed in those areas when it comes to errors in writing and are very quick to judge you for being a slapdash writer.

I do hold a strong belief that nobody should have their moral or intellectual character slighted because of how they structure sentences. (Unless of course they delight in being a rude nitpicker themselves, in which case it's just funny.)

Yeah, I basically agree with the posts I've read so far. My first language is not English, it's Italian (and I'm also dyslexic but that's another story) and here in Italy young boys and girls use short words or misspell words a lot, especially while writing. The real problem here, though? No, it's not just short words or things like that. No. Italian is a quite difficult language to learn, we have a lot of different been tenses. A lot of people (and not just teenagers, also adults) get the wrong tense and it's just sooo annoying! They just don't realise it's wrong!!
Also, I started reading online stories in English a few years back (reading in another language helps me a lot with my dyslexia and my attention problems) and I've read not a few time words like "since" or "(more) than" misspelled! Sense and since are two different words, learn the difference pls :)

This is annoying to me the most as well. Every time someone messages me anywhere and use the wrong they're/their/there, it really gets on my nerves. Text speak is something that doesn't bother me as much, personally, but the wrong word does. Or if someone won't just say 'them' and says 'he or she', my day gets a bit less great. They/them is a great pronoun to use when referring to someone you've never met, and even though this isn't the right forum for this, it does annoy me and connects to grammar.

I used to care a lot about grammar and be really against like text or chatspeak at all but all that changed when I got a smartphone hahaha. I mean obviously chatspeak has it's place and isn't appropriate for everything but it doesn't make me think less of someone's intelligence. One thing I do really hate is when people say "I could care less." Ughhhh!!!!

I don't really care if people use text speak, as long as it's the appropriate setting to do so. For instance, I would certainly not send anything containing "bc" or "idk" to a teacher or boss. For me, the more annoying grammar errors are when people confuse words like "you're"/"your", "their"/"there"/"they're", "past"/"passed", "definitely"/"defiantly", etc. I also get very annoyed when people use apostrophes incorrectly, for instance, "get's". Personally, I use the Oxford comma, and I don't put an extra "s" after a possessive comma on a name ending with an "s" sound, i.e. "Stevens's". I just think it looks weird.

Also totally agree with @RoonilWazlib, "I could care less" is just wrong.

Some mistakes really annoy me, like writing "quite" when they mean "quiet". It happens way too much, the difference is obvious. Your reading skills have to be kinda bad if you confuse them (or it's just a typo but still). I also hate it when people use too many commas or periods or when they don't use the space bar after using a comma, it's rather lazy. And of course there's the usual "they're", "there", "their" or "your", "you're" mistakes that always happen. I have to admit that even I confuse them when I'm not paying attention but it's not that hard to differentiate. Also, people should know when to not use chatspeak because it can be disrespectful and it looks dumb in some settings (or most ha).
